Top 10 Galentine’s Day Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Valentine’s Day can be filled with anticipation, anxiety, and a lot of times feelings of loneliness for people not in relationships. Never fear, because Galentine’s Day is the perfect alternative. Just grab a bunch of your best gal pals and have a girls night, treating each other like the queens you know you are. Some top choice activities include binging on chocolate, candy, snazzy drinks, doing face masks, and my personal favorite, watching great movies! Here are a few films to get your night going!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

This is the ultimate showcase of female friendship. These girls go through all the different emotions that being a teenager brings and even touches on some intense life situations, like divorce and death. It also shows the difficulties in friendships while showing how important your friends are to your life.

Clueless

If you’re looking for a throwback 90s vibe, then this classic adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma is perfect. Filled with teen angst and high school drama (think boys, cars, and more boys), this film is lighthearted yet moving. It will definitely make you recollect on the fights you’ve had with your best friends and how great it is when you finally make up.

Bridesmaids

While you may not be in the mood to watch a wedding movie when you’re trying to forget how single you are, rest assured this is a female-oriented movie about friendship and growing up. It’s about trying to keep and recover a friendship that has lasted so long when everything is changing. Along the way, the women may even make new friends. It’s funny, it’s disgusting, and it’s relatable.

Pitch Perfect

You’ve probably already seen this campy film about an all-female collegiate a cappella group. If so, then you already know that it is about more than just singing. It is about finding your place in a new environment and learning to accept and appreciate the people around you because they will always have your back.

Bride Wars

I know what you’re probably thinking: Not another movie about marriage. Yes, it is. But, this too is about the changing relationship between two best friends who are getting married at the same time. Not only are they getting married on the same day, but in the same place. They attempt to outdo each other until their friendship is ultimately in shambles. It’s a movie about realizing what and who is important in your life, and how they intersect with each other.

Sisters

While this one is not about friendship in the typical sense, it is about the relationship between two very different sisters. After years of clashing over different lifestyles, these two are forced to reevaluate their relationship and in the process learn a lot about themselves. Obviously with a cast like Amy Poehler (BC grad, woo!) and Tina Fey you’ll be laughing out loud along with the rest of your squad.

Mona Lisa’s Smile

If you’re feeling an old-fashioned vibe, check out this film. Not only does it have great female relationships, but it also features a fantastic cast (Kirsten Dunst, Julia Roberts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, to name a few). It follows art students at an all-girls college in the 1950s. Not only does it deal with (basically forced) marriage, controversial relationships, and the pressures of academic success, it also addresses the sexism and inequality women faced during that time. A must watch movie if you want to feel all the emotions.

A League of Their Own

A League of Their Own is another movie set in 1983 with much of the movie taking place in flashbacks to the 1940s. It is about an all-women baseball league during the time World War II threatened the to shut down Major League baseball. It addresses the importance of being a team and the struggles that go along with that. Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna are a few of the big names, along with Tom Hanks as their coach. If you like baseball or know what it’s like to be on a team, traveling with them for weeks, you’ll appreciate this movie.

The Princess Diaries

While this is mainly a movie about self-actualization, it also deals with the way relationships change during times of transition in a girl’s life. Mia finds out she’s a princess, and while not many of us have that bragging right, we can relate to the struggles of being a teenage girl- the constant fear of others’ judgment, awkward conversations with romantic interests. Mia goes through all of this and in the process has to navigate her friendship with her best friend, her relationship with her mom, as well as her new relationship with her grandmother.

Mean Girls

The iconic teenage mean girl movie may not be the movie to base your friendships off of, but it is definitely the film you and your friends can quote and make fun of throughout its run. Ridiculous and oddly relatable, Mean Girls shows how not to treat your friends and that everyone needs a friend no matter how cool they are.

Ultimately, Galentine’s Day is just an excuse to hang out with your best friends and pamper each other. Romantic relationships are great, yes, but remember to grow your friendships as well. Your friends will be there when you ultimately complain about the annoying things your partner does or when you just need someone to talk to. So go and celebrate this Galentine’s Day by watching some of the great female friendships of the Big Screen!
