I have a confession to make – I’m absolutely obsessed with the Olympics! Every two years for about two weeks, I turn into a belligerent patriot and channel my inner frat boy by instigating USA chants as often as possible. While I love watching the different sports, I have to acknowledge that one of my favorite parts of the Olympics Games is the opening ceremony. This year’s opening ceremony uniforms ranged from gorgeous to garish; here are a few favorites!

To be completely honest, I hated the USA uniform when I first saw it! As a friend of mine put it, “It looks like the 4th of July threw up on a Christmas sweater.” However, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that it has grown on me. There’s something endearing about the grandpa-chic look.

Our neighbors to the north knocked it out of the park this year. I love the Mountie-inspired toggle coats. It’s a look that’s clearly Canadian, but still classy.

Well, Germany’s 2014 uniform certainly won’t be forgotten soon. With a myriad of bright colors, these uniforms command attention. It’s worth noting that there’s speculation that this design was a response to Russia’s anti-gay laws.

Japan went for the opposite side of the spectrum. With clean lines and a monochromatic color scheme, these uniforms stand out in their austerity. Somehow it works.

Of course, the host country did not disappoint. In uniforms inspired by Russian cultural heritage, the host team looked warm and toasty. No polar bears were harmed in the making of these coats… probably.

These opening ceremony uniforms were all noteworthy – for better or for worse! What were your favorites?
