Magazine web editor by day and non-profit philanthropist by night, Tammy Tibbetts is the web editor of Seventeen Magazine (specializing in all things prom) and the founder of a relatively new not-for-profit, She’s the First.
Tibbetts noticed the lack of educational programs for women in underdeveloped countries and recognized that a change needed to be made. In 2009, She’s the First was born. The name is based on the idea that if awareness for education could be raised, then more girls would have the chance to become the first in their families to graduate, the first doctors in their villages, or even the first female politicians in their countries.
In addition to promoting education among women, She’s the First has another important goal. This goal is to foster leadership and create self-awareness among Americans by encouraging them to participate in the organization’s mission. Through fundraising, advocating, and getting involved with She’s the First, America can make a world of difference. Involved Americans are connected to a specific girl in a specific village, instilling a real sense of friendship and community across cultural boundaries.
You may be wondering how you can get involved. Luckily, Her Campus has recently partnered with She’s the First for a campaign entitled Tie-Die Cupcake Bake-Off. With the slogan, “Cupcakes can change the world,” this campaign aims to fundraise for girls’ education in eight different countries: India, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Nepal, Kenya, Guatemala, and South Sudan. The idea is to bake tie-die cupcakes and host bake sales during the week of November 1-8.
Does this sound interesting? If so, let Her Campus BC know that you want to get involved! We would absolutely love to have our own Tie-Die Cupcake Bake-Off here at BC to help She’s the First. Let us know if you’re interested by leaving a note in the comments section or emailing any of our editors. And remember, sometimes the smallest things (like a cupcake!) can change the world.
