Secret Gem to Living Off-Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Everyone thinks they know all the exciting parts of living off-campus. Fun parties, independence, and all that other good stuff. But, after my time living on Foster Street, I have discovered so many secret gems to the off-campus life.

1. Exercise

Who needs the Plex when you can chase buses every morning? Or, if you’re like me and really love personal space in the morning, you can just put on some comfy shoes and walk. It’s super fun to show up to class panting with sweat stains!

2. Pets

How rude is it that we can’t have pets in dorms? How are we supposed to become responsible adults without learning to raise a small, furry creature in the comfort of a 2×2 double on CoRo? Luckily, when you live off-campus, you don’t even need to get a pet. They will find you. The rabid raccoon living in my backyard and I have become great friends.

3. Mature Responsibilities

Mature responsibilities are the best. Nothing is better than taking out the trash (and then getting tickets for not taking the barrels in soon enough), taking care of your car (so much snow, so much shoveling) or maintaining typical household duties (clogged drains make me cry).

4. No More Dining Hall Food

Dining hall food is gross. We complain about it all the time. When you live off-campus, though, you never have to eat it again (until next year)! Sure, you could get a meal plan, but why would you? Cooking is fun and time consuming and potentially hazardous! Plus, what is better than cleaning up after?!

5. No RAs, No Rules

Okay, well technically there is an off-campus RA, but I’ve never met him so I can’t really confirm his existence. Side note: Off-Campus RA, if you are reading this, I’m sorry I doubt you exist. Bonus: you’re kind of like a unicorn! Magical. Anyways, you can be loud and rowdy and do whatever you want all the time! If you throw a party well enough, the police might even come! Basically off-campus life is the fast-track to popularity.

So there we have it. I think we can all conclude that living off-campus is without a doubt the most luxurious experience of BC students’ dreams!
