Reasons Why Carbs are Not the Devil

I loooooove pasta and bread.  So much so that my parents’ nickname for me was “Carb Monster.”  

I have always been very dedicated to my health and fitness, and senior year of high school I wanted to make some improvements to my body.  I had heard from several sources, mainly magazines and commercials, that if you want to have the model six-pack and thick butt you need to cut carbs out of your diet.  This could not be more incorrect.  I greatly limited my carb intake to way below what my body required and I began to feel sluggish and tired.  If I decided to treat myself to a bag of baked pita chips I would later feel awful about the effect it would have on my appearance.  After doing much more research and looking into more reliable sources, I learned that carbs are not only not terrible for you, but the right carbs, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, potatoes, beans, and lentils, are actually great for your body.  

Prepare to have your mind blown.

1. Carbs break down into glucose, which is your body’s main source of fuel.  Without glucose, you have no energy.

2. They help power your brain functions.

3. Scientifically, carbs make you happy.  Most carbohydrates contain tryptophan, which helps produce the “happy hormone,” serotonin, in your brain.

4. Whole-grain carbs can help reduce chances of heart disease and high cholesterol.

5. Good carbs contain fiber, which can help keep everything in your body running smoothly and help reduce bloating.

6. If you’re trying to tone up any part of your body, including your butt, carbs are essential for muscle growth.

7. THEY TASTE GOOD.

In conclusion, carbs are not the devil they are portrayed to be.  So grab some whole wheat pasta and a baked potato and TREAT YO SELF.
