There’s a famous quote, supposedly by Bob Marley, that says “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”.  Well, no offense to Mr. Marley, but I tend to disagree.  In some cases, music can only serve to reinstate your pain.  One example in particular?  That of a breakup.  There is nothing more devastating in the first post-split week than that song you both used to listen to shuffling up on your iPod with no warning.  One cannot help but tie music to strong memories and, sadly, when those memories turn sour, that music can be about as beautiful as nails on a chalkboard.

But put down that carton of Ben and Jerry’s (or depending on how you deal, that handle of Rubinoff), my friend!  Luckily you’re not the only one to have your heart sliced and gutted-out in a velociraptor-like fashion– it has happened to plenty of musicians before you who put their rage/depression/all the above into some classic songs.  The hardest part of a breakup is feeling lonely and, when listening to the words of people who had to deal with the same things, the loneliness can seem a little more bearable.  So with that thought in mind, strap on the headphones, bring out the Kleenex, and try to remember that even Bob Dylan had to deal with this.
