A few months ago, I started seeing a drastic change in a grungy building on Washington Street – the inside of it was gradually turning bright green!  In a few weeks’ time, signs had gone up indicating that the new store going in there was called “Naked Pizza.”  Intrigued by the name, I started researching it and loved what I found.  I am so compulsive about reading the ingredients list on every grocery I buy (unless it’s dessert, then it doesn’t count), so I was thrilled that Naked Pizza was a company that used all fresh, natural ingredients in their food.

I am also obsessed with pizza, so I really wanted to try this place ASAP.  There’s another location in Coolidge Corner, so my Her Campus BC co-president Brittany and I arranged to meet with the manager and hear more about the business.  We ended up getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen and also free pizza!

My pizza is on the left and Brittany’s is on the right!

Tim, the manager, was great
and had some really interesting things to say about the company’s honest approach not only to food but to business as well.  The company was started in New Orleans after Hurrican Katrina hit as a way of putting people back to work.  It has now expanded and continues to operate with a conscientious philosophy, focusing on providing a quick and healthy alternative to fast food and on treating its employees fairly.  In the wake of the Upper Crust pizza scandal, many people are choosing Naked Pizza simply because of this philosophy (although the pizza is delicious, too!).

I was trying to listen carefully to all of this, but my eyes kept wandering over to where one of the workers was making pizza.  It was dinnertime, and everything smelled delicious.  I could see all the ingredients, which Tim explained were freshly cut each morning – no canned veggies on this pizza!  And the crust, he explained, is made of a blend of 10 ancestral grains, which makes it lower calorie and higher in protein.  Click here to see more about the nutrition info.

The people were so friendly and gave Brittany and I each a pizza to try – hers was pepperoni and mine was topped with black beans, peppers, and onions with barbecue sauce instead of tomato sauce.  I meant to only eat half, but I didn’t have enough willpower.  It was so delicious that I devoured all of it in about 5 minutes.  (I’ve also had it two more times since then.)

Yummy-looking, freshly cut peppers!

You can stop by either 433 Washington Street or 1331 Beacon Street to get pizza in the store (it’s fun – there are iPads to play with while you wait).  Or if you can’t venture out, the Washington Street location (at the end of Lake Street) delivers to BC, so it’s super quick and easy to get healthy food!

If this article hasn’t convinced you to try Naked Pizza right now, then we have another incentive!  This week, Her Campus BC is partnering with Naked Pizza with a $20 giveaway.  All you have to do is become a fan of Her Campus BC on Facebook (click here!) and Naked Pizza Boston by this Sunday, May 8th, and you will be eligible to win!  And who doesn’t love free stuff?
