Oscars: Best and Worst Dressed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Another award show has come and gone and, with The Oscars marking the official end to the season, we have to revel in all of its glory. This year’s show featured many newcomers that definitely made a statement alongside lots of veteran favorites that may have been playing it safe. While there were some amazing, drop-dead gorgeous dresses, there were also some “what were they thinking?” choices. Let’s break it down for this season’s final best and worst dressed.

From old Hollywood stunners to modern princess gowns, this year’s celebrities of the Oscars embraced every trend available to them. Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o completely stole the show in her custom Prada number, blowing the competition out of the water. Dubbed “Lupitella” by fashion correspondents, her amazing blue dress was very reminiscent of everyone’s favorite Disney Princess making it a clear crowd favorite.

Both Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts chose light gowns, which emphasized their glowing skin and really stood out against the red carpet. Their vintage gowns and minimalist accessories were a great contrast to some of the more extravagant gowns of the night.

Several celebrities including Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde rocked the baby bump as their best accessory for the evening, and looked stunning while doing it.

Along with the fashion hits, always comes a few misses as well. Even though she was not technically an actress, fashion correspondent Lara Spencer’s dress reminded me of bubble wrap and bubble necklaces, in the worst way possible. Definitely a miss in my book.

While Angelina Jolie’s hair and makeup looked amazing, the weird sequin placement on this dress looked like a wardrobe malfunction in the making and detracted from her natural beauty. I feel like this dress was almost amazing, but just didn’t quite make it there.

Overall, last night’s dresses were definitely amazing with just a few misses. I think that everyone brought their A-game and this year’s best dressed was definitely a hard choice!
