An Open Letter to Social Media Haters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

If you’re reading this, chances are this isn’t the first Her Campus BC article you’ve stumbled across. In fact, many of you may even look forward to our new posts every day (we love you guys, too). Sadly, though, my fellow staff members and I have recently had to tolerate a significant amount of hate via the Internet, and being a mature adult with an outlet to have my voice heard, I’d like to address some of the things being posted anonymously.

Her Campus BC is a publication that features different organizations and individuals at Boston College in support of what they do. We like to keep our readers informed about upcoming events around campus and in Boston, and even hold fundraisers for various charities multiple times a semester. We’re very proud of our wide variety of content, including fashion and beauty articles and the fan-favorite weekly Campus Cutie. But we are much, much more than that. I have personally been brought to tears both writing and reading HC BC articles, and I know that a lot of our pieces have meant a great deal to a lot of people.

Having transferred to BC after undergoing very serious medical issues, Her Campus allowed me an outlet to channel my passions for writing and leadership, and, yes, spill my guts out onto a blank page. It’s become more than just a club to me at this point. These girls are like my family, and just like any family, we’ve been through a lot together. As a senior, and a chief editor and campus correspondent, it breaks my heart to see hurtful messages posted anonymously on social media sites. But the issue isn’t even that. It’s not our content people are lashing out against, but us. Since when did calling someone you don’t even know terrible names, when you yourself are hiding behind a mask online, become acceptable? If there is ever an issue with our content, Her Campus BC will gladly take your suggestions in hopes of bettering our publication and gaining support. If, however, posting unnecessarily crude messages anonymously on the Internet is your thing, then your actions are nothing but cowardly and I feel sorry for you. As a community, Boston College is better than that, and we as a group of individuals should not tolerate this sort of treatment. If you honestly stand for something, then you shouldn’t have to hide from your beliefs. If you’re lashing out because you’re bored, then consider what you’re actually saying before you publish it.

And to our devoted followers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, not just for reading, but also for being respectful. Writing for you all has meant the world to me, and I hope that you’ve enjoyed sharing the experience half as much as I have.
