An Open Letter to Makeup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Dear Makeup,

I’m just going to come right out and say it. I love you. Seriously. No other relationship in my life has been equally steady. Okay, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but at the risk of sounding incredibly vain, I just want to thank you for being a part of my life.

There is something so peaceful about taking ten minutes every morning, and focusing on nothing by yourself. With every stroke of mascara, all my other problems seem to slowly fade away. I admit, I’ve had to “paint on” a brave face on more than one occasion, but life gets tough sometimes. It’s nice knowing that a little makeup can help you get past those bumpy roads with a whole lot of class and beauty.

Now, I’m not encouraging every girl reading this to wear makeup every day if you’re not used to it or to go out and spend a fortune at Sephora (although I’m personally not the least bit sorry). I’m merely embracing the glory that is makeup, and the privilege some of us might not even consider in wearing it. As a form of personal expression, it’s great that we are able to flaunt our beauty proudly. With that said, we should also always remember that true beauty is more than skin deep, and we should always treat others with kindness. And hey, if our outsides dare to shine as brightly and as beautifully as our hearts, we can thank makeup for giving us a tiny edge in the game!

HC XO
