Mistakes Made While De-Stressing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

When one set of midterms finally finishes, another set always seems to surface before you get a chance to rest. You applaud yourself for studying (or not) only to have to start all over again. The cycle continues throughout the entire year.

For me, I like to know all the dates of my exams, deadlines for homework, and syllabus for the entire course at the beginning, so I know when everything is happening. However, I personally get so stressed just thinking in advance about all the things that I need to complete; my stress is so stressful that it stresses me out. So basically, I can never win.

If you are stressed and people notice, everyone always tells you to “relax” or “de-stress.” If only it were that easy…Now there are so many different ways to de-stress and every person has their go-to activity that makes the workload less hectic. However, if you are like me, my de-stressing techniques become too much and I end up putting an excessive amount of time in activities that are trying to help relieve tension, ultimately making my stress worse. (Can you understand that??)

Hang out With Friends

Yes, hanging out with friends helps you relieve yourself from your schoolwork, but it is probably one of the worst things I do. My roommate goes home a lot to sleep, so my room becomes the hang out spot. As soon as I let them in, I am preparing myself for a night free of schoolwork. Once they are in, they will not leave before 2 am. While it is possible to do work with a friend (one friend, two at the most!) when there is five or six, there is no point in trying.

Watch Netflix

I know I just said that hanging out with your friends is one of the worst things I could choose to do, but watching Netflix is definitely the worst decision I could make. Watching a show distracts me from the amount of stress I am experiencing. The problem is, that it will distract me for an extended amount of time from any necessary schoolwork that needs to be completed. It’s not possible to just watch one episode of One Tree Hill. I mean, look at Nathan Scott! How am I supposed to get back to work?

Listen to Music

Music is a wonderful thing. It motivates me to run. It helps me sleep. It pumps me up for class. It basically has the power to change my mood in any positive way. However, if I decide to take a music break from homework, I suddenly end up listening to every single album from some unknown artist, then going onto YouTube watching their videos. And we all know that once you start clicking on the suggested videos on YouTube, it is extremely difficult to stop.

Sleep

No. Absolutely not. Thinking about it now, this may take the cake over watching Netflix. If I sleep, I will sleep for a long time and when I wake up, I will be too tired to start working again. So sleeping or taking a nap is a definite no-no.

How about you, Collegiettes? How do you survive the midterm crunch?
