Minimize Your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

When I wrote the post a few weeks ago about giving up Forever 21, I realized that I really needed to tone down my shopping habits. Well, I don’t know if that’s actually possible, but I can at least work on minimizing my closet. Here are some things that I’ve taken out of my closet in the past week, and some things that maybe you should consider giving away as well:

1. High School Denim: I no longer wear a size 25, and that’s okay. I don’t like my old jeans hanging in my closet as a constant reminder that I need to put down the sweet tea and go to the gym. (I mean, I probably get some type of ab workout from laughing at Parks & Recreation, right??). Also, my Levi’s shorts are now super bootylicious from over-washing; it’s their time to go.

2. Plain White Tees: Just like the band, most of my plain white tees are from 2009 and need to be forgotten. I know white t-shirts are supposed to be classic (and they TOTALLY are) but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need to be replaced. White fades, and a dull, dingy t-shirt is not (and never will be) a must have.

3. Anything I haven’t worn in the last 6 months: I may or may not have a shopping problem—don’t lie, I bet you do, too. And I do form strange attachments to all of my clothes, even when I don’t particularly like wearing them. I finally pulled it together (somewhat) and decided to donate all of my clothes that I haven’t worn in the past 6 months. It was pretty emotional.

I know that for many of us shopping is therapeutic, but cleaning out your closet is therapeutic as well. Your space will look better and more organized, and it’s much easier to get dressed in the morning when you’re not sifting through random shrunken flannels and old t-shirts from eighth grade summer camp. That’s another thing: clean out your t-shirt drawer. I promise, you don’t need a t-shirt from every life event.

There are a couple of consignment stores on Harvard Ave—accessible by the B line—but they end up being really picky. If you’re looking to get rid of clothes, I would suggest stopping by a consignment store first and then heading over to the Goodwill on Comm. Ave to donate the rest!

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
