Middle School Trends We all Knew and Loved

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Middle school: a time where braces were the ultimate accessory and fashion trends were questionable. After recently looking back at old Facebook photo albums, (which I highly recommend), it seems that there were certain staples in every 7th graders wardrobe. Here are some of the it fashion trends we all thought were cool when we were 13.

1. Juicy couture track suits. Because popularity was heavily based on how blinged out the back of your jacket was. Extra points for obnoxious color and phrases.

2. Butter sweatshirts. I still have no idea how they became popular, but in my middle school, most girls were proud advocates for their love of butter.

3. Victoria’s Secret yoga pants. Because if they didn’t say “Pink” and weren’t covered in gemstones, then quite frankly, they just didn’t suffice.

Work out, Hang out, Look hot, Love Pink

4. Juicy couture charm bracelet. Although it’s not very practical to have huge charms dangling off your wrist, I would still cram one onto every link on the bracelet.

5. Soffe shorts. Although they were way too short and way too tight, I still begged my mom for a pair for my 12th birthday.

6. Abercrombie. Anything. Especially the long t-shirts and lace camis were a must have in middle school. If your shirt had a moose embroidered on it, it took your outfit to the next level.

7. Uggs. Almost every girl had the pair with fur trim on the outside. Or even worse than uggs; fake uggs (also known as fuggs)

8. Sugar lips. Possibly the tightest tank tops every made. None the less, I wore them under everything and made sure to pull them down to pretty much my knee so everyone could see how fashion forward I was.

This pose pretty much sums middle school up.

9. Bar/bat mitzvah sweatshirts. If you attended catholic middle school, you unfortunately missed out on the extravagant sweatshirts and pull overs that everyone wore the Monday after a bar or bat mitzvah. Some people would also re-wear the hats and beads they would pass around the dance floor. Fortunately, that never became a staple.

10. Tying a t-shirt with a hair tie. T shirt too long? No problem! Just tie a hair tie around the extra fabric and voila! An instant 2009 fashion staple.

Thank you to my best friend for offering up this gem to demonstrate how to properly rock a tied t-shirt, with a sugar lip, and soffe shorts. Hope you bring back this outfit soon.

So go out and rock those fuggs!….. or leave them behind along with the rest of your middle school favorites.

Hi! I'm Shannon Brink and I'm currently a freshman at BC. I'm from a small town in New Jersey, and I love being outdoors and traveling with friends and family. I'm the youngest of three, and living in a male dominated house where football typically takes over the dinner conversation, it's refreshing to have an outlet to talk about things that genuinely interest me and are relevant to my life as a clueless freshman trying to learn the ropes of college.
Blake is a senior at Boston College and is pursuing Biology and Pre-Med, as well as the perfect slice of pizza. She is so excited to be a co-Campus Correspondent along with Emily this year! As well as being a writer for Her Campus BC, she is also a member of the Girls Club Lacrosse team, the Public Health Club, and is a physics tutor on campus.
