With Spring Break getting closer and closer, it’s getting difficult to think of anything but our escapes from the college life. If you’ll be at the beach, in a different country, at home, it doesn’t matter – there’s a good chance you’ll be spending money on something. Here are some ways to save money so you can enjoy your break without breaking the bank!
Stop Drinking Coffee
This sounds absurd, I know (especially during midterms), but if you at least swapped your Starbucks for a meal plan iced coffee, you could save a good amount of money. For example, if I stopped drinking my four dollar mocha for two weeks, that would be fifty-six dollars that I save!
Savings: Up to $60
Sell Your Books
For all the books that the bookstore wouldn’t buy back in December, now’s the time to sell. Amazon’s a great place for students to sell back their textbooks, and you get a reasonable price for them. You can also go to a local used bookstore to ensure that they sell right away.
Savings: A normal book can get you $10 each
Do Your Own Mani/Pedi
Yes, of course it’s important to look nice and pamper yourself for your vacation, but if you skip the salon and do your own nails, it can save you a lot of money. Painting your nails on your own gives you the opportunity to be creative, and you won’t accidentally kick the person giving you a pedicure when it tickles.
Savings: $55
Take An Extra Shift
Working is last thing you want to do during midterms, but working an extra hour for each shift you have would save you enough money to go to that fancy restaurant on the beach that’s always advertised. Instead of thinking of it like spending an extra hour at work, think of it as wasting one less hour on Netflix and Buzzfeed.
Savings: $36 for four extra hours at a work study job
In two weeks, you can save up to $161 for your vacation (or stay-cation). Simple changes in your lifestyle can really add up, so next time you’re about to splurge, stop and think of what you could buy with the money over spring break.
