Winter in Boston does not have the best reputation. This year, it has upheld that bad reputation with flying colors. In a matter of weeks, we’ve experienced more snow than I care to see in an entire winter, and temperatures that I wish I would never have to see in a lifetime. Not only is it causing many tough life decisions — Will I catch hypothermia if I wait in the (now inevitable) Mary Ann’s line for an hour? Was trudging through the mounds of snow enough, or do I still have to go to the Plex tonight? — but it’s really cramping my style as well.
Let’s face it: when it’s 15 degrees out, or snowing for the fourth day in a row, sweats are looking like a godsend. But fashionistas of BC rejoice, because there’s good news! The trend forecasters have been much kinder than the ones who deal with weather, and they’ve given us some fabulous alternatives to our oversized Eagles gear. It is possible to feel comfy and cozy without looking like you’ve been lying on the couch for a week.

Let’s get the most obvious on the page first: leggings. The spandex options are unending. There are leggings for any and all occasions. We’ve got the basic cotton leggings, the infamous jeggings, corduroy leggings, leather leggings, equestrian leggings, and everything in between (visit Hue.com to find all of these variations). Pair them with a flowy tunic and a cardigan, and you’re good to go.
Â
Boyfriend jeans may not be as good as an actual boyfriend, but they certainly can be a friend. Take a break from the constricting skinny jeans and put on a pair that will make you realize why boys don’t complain about the pain of fashion. This pair from Victoria’s Secret is both cute and affordable:
VS Boyfriend Straight-leg Jean, $39.50
Throw on a lace-accented tee-shirt (or if you don’t mind a grungier look, try a warm flannel with some funky jewelry) and some moccasins, and you’re in business.
Â
Another option is to wrap yourself up in a thick, cozy sweater or cardigan that will give you the warmth of your hoodie without the sloppy look. This is one time when excess fabric is not a faux pas. As long as you balance out the bulk with fitted bottoms (look back to your trusty leggings), you’ll look both practical and put-together. Try this one from Victoria’s Secret:
Victoria’s Secret Chunky-knit Open Cardigan Sweater, $49
And if you’re ever having one of those days where you really just want to throw on sweatpants and a sweatshirt, at least do it with style. Grab a pair of yoga pants and try a sweatshirt with a feminine twist, like this one with flower shoulder accents by Plastic Island:
Â
Plastic Island City Pullover Top, On sale for $34.50 on shopbop.com
Â
You’ll get the same level of comfort with some added style.

Finally, don’t forget about your footwear. Whether you’re sporting a pair of galoshes or snow boots, wear something practical (it’s never fun scrubbing salt and sand off of leather!). If you haven’t already, invest in a good pair of all-weather boots. This is one area where it’s definitely worth it to splurge for good quality (try Hunter or Sorel), because it’s not looking like Mother Nature is planning on becoming our friend any time soon!
