It Seems as Though There Are Two Stereotypes When it Comes to Freshman Roommates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

“Century Gothic””>It seems as though there are two stereotypes when it comes to your freshman year roommate: they either become your best friend forever or they are an evil psychopath who tries to kill you in your sleep. I, however, have found myself somewhere in the middle. My roommate is a great person, don’t get me wrong, but we just don’t have all that much in common. And while I would consider us friendly, we don’t really hang out together much. When I tell my friends and family about this situation they feel bad for me and act as though I am missing out on an essential college experience. So, to combat this reaction, here are the 5 advantages of not being best friends with your roommate:

You can have get an outsider’s opinion

“Century Gothic””> My roommate and I are in different friend groups. Different friend groups means different drama. Because of this, we are able to talk to each other and give each other advice on how to handle these social situations. This allows us to be completely unbiased and to give advice based on an outsider’s perspective.

2) It is easy to give/get space

Because we don’t hang out together, my roommate and I are often both hanging out with our own friends in other locations. This leaves the room empty for most of the day allowing us to have space to be alone if necessary. We also have more personal boundaries between us because of our lack of closeness, which despite sounding bad at first, is kind of nice because we have more respect for each other’s belongings.

3) You make more friends

One big advantage is that it allows you to meet more people. Because we are in different friend groups, I have been able to meet and become friendly with her friends. This is easy to do when living with someone and allows you to break away from your set group of friends and mingle with new people.

4)They still take care of you

Even though we don’t hang out, we still care for one another. This means that I know whenever I need anything I can ask her and she will be extremely willing to help. For example, when I got sick she took care of me and brought me soup. These small actions of kindness keep us connected with one another.

5) You can learn new things

My roommate and I are very different, which includes our interests and our backgrounds. Because of this, I have been able to learn new things especially about the things that interest her.  For example, her family is of Chinese decent and they still celebrate some of the traditions. This fall, she opened my eyes to the Chines Harvest Mooncake. This is one of the many things that I have had the opportunity to learn from my roommate.

Even if you and your roommates aren’t best friends there are still many advantages to living with them. I also know that despite the fact that we probably won’t live together next year, I have made a friend that I will still be able to talk to whenever in the years to come.
