News Flash: On March 15, Instagram announced the introduction of an algorithm that will be used to reorder our feeds based on moments they believe we’ll care about most. Essentially what this means is that our posts will no longer appear in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest).
The move to this new feature helps address and organize the overabundance of content on Instagram’s platform. In their company blog, Instagram states that on average people miss 70% of their feeds. As more and more people post more and more often, it has become much harder to keep up with all the photos and videos shared. Sure we may never miss a picture of our best friend’s puppy or our sister’s trip to the city, but what are the drawbacks? Some of the possible issues addressed and recognized by the company include backlash from users and privileging posts from bigger and more popular accounts. In other words, the beginning of our feeds will be flooded with foodies, celebrities, and pro sport teams whose instas we shamelessly like on a daily basis.
My opinion: Personally, I am not a fan of this feature. My biggest issue being that the sole reason I don’t miss any content is that Instagram is in reverse chronological order. Ultimately, Instagram just needs to create an option to turn this feature on and off. Simple as that.
So when can we expect the switch? According to their blog, Instagram is looking to make the change in the coming months (not specific, I know)—so be ready!
