With the spring semester upon us, one important component of your college experience might be missing. This semester, three of my closest friends are heading abroad. While I am of course extremely excited for them, I can’t help but feel sad at the same time. After all, they are a major part of my favorite college memories. This article will attempt to give all of you in similar situations some tips on how to deal.

Skype

Plan to skype with your friends at least once. Although Facebook and email are great, you can see their faces with Skype and checking up is a lot easier. It may take some planning if there is a big time difference, but it’s still do-able and they will likely be grateful to see a familiar face if they are getting a little homesick.

Branch out

If most of your friends are going abroad, now is a perfect time to expand your social circles. I’m not talking about finding replacements for your friends because if you have friends like mine, they’re one of a kind, but this is the perfect time to hang out with other people without having your friends feel neglected.

Don’t worry, they will be back

If your friends are abroad, they will only be gone a semester, maybe two. They will be back before you know it and you still have all of senior year to create memories together. I know it seems like you’ll never see them again, but I promise they will come back.

Have fun

Nothing makes time fly by faster then going out and having some fun. Your friends are probably venturing around the world, but who says you can’t have fun in Boston? Explore the city and try things you haven’t before. That way, you can both have fun stories to share when you’re reunited.
