How to Survive Move In Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s the day you’ve been waiting for since basically the first day of senior year of high school— college move in day is finally here! If you’re anything like me (and you probably are), you’ve been hunting down the cutest bedding, talking with your roommates about the color scheme, and looking for the best room decor. And also stressing out about fitting all your clothes, shoes, pictures, books, basically 18 years of life into a little 12×16 box.

Here’s how to make the big day go as smoothly as possible—everything from organizing jewelry to making the dorm feel like home to saying hello to a whole new lifestyle!

1. Don’t arrive at the same time as your roommates! I know it sounds kinda backwards but seriously, I was in a forced triple and moving into the room just by myself without two other people in an already cramped space was the best. I could lay out all my clothes, hang my pictures, and make my bed without tripping over anyone. Coordinate times with your roommates to move in at different times— the day felt SO much easier because of it

2. Invest in a rug. They come in a million different colors, you’ll get tons of compliments, its the perfect place to have girls crash after a Late Night run, and it makes the room feel more homey.

3. Command hooks are your new bff. You can never have too many and we used the littler ones to make a cute jewelry organizer (also got tons of compliments on this). Everything is easy to see and now your statement necklaces won’t take up precious desk or dresser space!

4. On a more serious note, thank your parents for helping you with everything. I know they were probably overbearing and stressful, but they care about you. It’s also the last time they’ll see you for a while. Appreciate their effort and don’t get embarrassed when your mom starts sobbing when its finally time to say goodbye—she’s gonna miss you more than you know!

Move-in day is not something to stress out about—BC makes it super easy and you meet some awesome people—I realized this after my mini breakdown the night before we made the drive out. All the craziness really isn’t crazy and you’ll be enjoying (or not so much) your first meal at Mac before you know it!
