How to Have Fun AND be Healthy on Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

The time you have been waiting for is here! It’s officially Spring Break! All those hours you spent in the gym and all those cupcakes you didn’t eat are paying off as you confidently strut out to the beach on the first day of your dream vacation. You may be tempted to treat yourself, which is totally acceptable because you earned it. But if you don’t want your pre-Spring Break prep to go to waste, here are some HCBC-approved tips.

Drinks

Instead of a strawberry daiquiri or a pina colada (both upwards of 300 calories), try one of these delicious drinks:

  • Mojito with half the simple syrup: around 140 calories
  • Seabreeze: 180 calories
  • Sour apple martini: 160 calories
  • Or better yet, water. Stay hydrated as you play in the sun!

Food

I know eating nachos by the pool is about all you’re thinking about right now, but if you think you’ll regret it later, try some of these tips:

  • Substitute a side of French fries with veggies or fresh fruit
  • Ask for whole grain bread
  • Ask for sauces/dressing on the side
  • Choose seafood as your source of protein
  • Share a dessert with your friends

Exercise

I’m not saying you have to spend your vacation at the gym, but a few of these exercises a day will keep you toned. You don’t want all of your hard work from the past few months to go to waste. Before heading out for the day, here’s a quick 10-minute workout:

  • 30 seconds of pushups
  • 30 seconds of mountain climbers
  • 30 seconds of high knees
  • 30 seconds of butt kicks
  • 1 minute of squat jumps
  • 1 minute of jump lunges
  • Repeat
  • Stretch for two minutes
  • You’re good to go!

First and foremost, have a good time. You’re on vacation. But these are simple and easy ways to keep yourself in shape while your away on Spring Break. Hope everyone has a great vacation!
