A Halloween Fairy Godmother of Savings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Every Halloween, there a lot of costumes that people buy with the intention of never wearing again. Dorothy, Disney Princesses, and Bride of Frankenstein may be good and all, but unless you plan on wearing that tiara or checkered dress to class, you probably will never wear it again. While you could save it to wear for a second Halloween, there is another option.

(Cue the twinkling music!)

Never fear, your own Fairy Godmother of Savings is here!

Below are various costumes that you can actually wear again, and when I mean wear again, I mean in public. In the daylight. Maybe even to (gasp!) class. While there are a few pieces here and there that may seem unnecessary, there is always repurposing value in them. So, sit back, relax, and watch me work my magic.

The Costume with School Spirit: Hermione or Ginny (GRYFFINDOR!)

With colors like maroon and gold, you can find your perfect pieces all at the gift shop. While it may cost you some money, what a better way to show your school pride AND be a character from the series. All you need is:

1 White Button Down
1 Black Pleated Skirt
1 Pair of Black Tights
1 Pair of Black Shoes (And Danskos are sooooo comfortable.)
1 Dark Grey Sweater
1 BC Scarf and/or 1 BC Tie

The Costume of Eclecticism: Gypsy

While you could just as easily go from a girl from the 70s, you could also go as a gypsy. Free and fun, it separates you from the rest of the pack. All you need is:

1 Broomstick Skirt
1 Bohemian Top
Multiple Bangles
1 Pair of Earrings
1 Pair of Patterned Ballet Flats
1 Scarf

The Costume of Creepy: Vampira

This is Halloween, night of witches, werewolves, and ghosts. Why go as something cute and adorable when you go as something that’s scary? I mean name another day of the year when you can go out as a scary, mythical creature. Vampira is perfect. There is a little bit of sexy, but also a lot of scary. All you need is:

1 Black Dress
1 Pair of Black Tights
1 Pair of Black Heels
Vampire Teeth

The Costume of the TV Show: Mad Men

While I did make a comment above about not picking a decade, I did not completely kabash dressing similarly. Rather, claim yourself as one of the women from Mad Men. Strong, yet beautiful. Sexy, but smart. What better combo for a girl? All you need is:

1 Dress
1 Sweater
1 Pair of Tights
1 Pair of Natural Heels
1 Pair of Pearl Studs
1 Pearl Necklace

The Costume of the Blockbuster: Katniss, The Hunger Games

While you could go as Catwoman or as Black Widow, you could also go as a third character, Katniss from The Hunger Games. While you do not have to carry around a bow and arrow, this costume is definitely a hit. (hehehe… get it?) Anyways, Katniss is a smart, fun character that knows how to stick it to The Capitol and President Snow. All you need is:

1 Pair of Green Pants
1 Black V-Neck Shirt
1 Black Rain Jacket
1 Pair of Boots
1 Mockingjay Pin

Now, my work here is done. You have many roads to take, but only you can choose which one. (What? Did you think I was just going to hand over the ruby slippers and tell you to click your heels three times? That’s not the way it works, dearie.)

Have a spooktacular Halloween!

(Cue the twinkling exit music! Vanish into a puff of black sparkles!)

But don't let that cool you off. She's a loaded pistol who likes piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. Yours for the rescuing: Princess Danica!  (And yes, that is a quote from Shrek...)
