Fashion Week:  It’s that magical time of glitz and glamour and chaos and caffeine.  It’s the time when fashion editors, models, and celebrities flock to NYC for a week of pure fashion fueled solely by Starbucks, cigarettes, and the promise of amazing clothes.  For girls, Fashion Week is a time to ignore our midterms and lose ourselves in opulent silk tulle Marchesa gowns or Proenza Schouler’s buttery leather clutches.  We wait on edge to find out what items make it on every celeb’s wish lists.

But what is it for guys?  Do they have an opinion on fashion?  I asked some BC beauties and bros to weigh in on these so called “ready-to wear” trends for Fall 2011, and the (surprising) answer is… yes!  Boys do have an opinion on fashion!  (Boys, don’t deny it – we’ve caught you looking at our Cosmo‘s and Vogue’s).

Trend #1:  Red Alert!  As seen at Chado Ralph Rucci

Trend Report:  When we think NY fashion, we think black.  Not this year.  Bold red hues showed up everywhere on NY runways from Diane von Furstenberg’s slinky red sequin gown to Jil Sander’s structured shift dresses to the 11 head-to-toe red looks at Chado Ralph Rucci.  For Fall 2011, the color red is hot!

BC beauty says:
“I love this red outfit!  I like how they intermixed a bunch of different fabrics.  It looks really modern, but that dress could definitely be worn off the runway!” – Nina M., A&S ’13

BC bros say:
“It looks like Cupid threw up on her.” – Robbie Brennan, A&S ’13

“Little Red Riding hood ate the wolf.” – Ryan Murphy, A&S ’13

“Where did they find an animal with red fur?  What’s the hood thing?” – PJ Concannon, A&S ’13

Trend #2:  Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow!  At Proenza Schouler

Trend Report:  The color combination of black and yellow was almost as big a hit as the Wiz Khalifa song.  It was seen at Burberry Prorsum’s show, where black and yellow plaid coats were a new twist on the classic Burberry plaid.  It was also seen at Proenza Schouler’s origami and geometry inspired collection.

BC beauties say:
“I really like this outfit because the yellow was not too bright, more of a mustard shade rather than bright sunshine – I think that’s absolutely essential to avoid the insect/caution tape look.” – Stephanie Betzler, A&S ’13

“I really dislike everything about this dress.  I think the yellow is kind of a gross shade and I really don’t think the necklace goes at all.” – Elaina Donofrio, A&S ’13

BC bro says:
“I don’t see the design in this.  It looks like it could have been curtains and she looks miserable in it.  I would not see this being worn in public.” – PJ Concannon, A&S ’13

Trend #3:  Sheer genius at Gucci

Trend Report:  The sheer trend was seen in dresses, blouses, and skirts.  There were the glamorous versions of the trend – like this Gucci gown – and edgier sheer looks in black as seen at Theysken’s Theory, Christian Siriano, and Alexander Wang’s shows.

BC beauty says:
“I always go back and forth with sheer pieces, I think because I’ve seen some really awful dresses or tops that honestly just needed more layers of fabric to be acceptable off the runway.  That being said, this piece is gorgeous!  The fabric is awesome – delicate and feminine but layered enough so that the dress is still tasteful.  I love the ruching in the bodice too – so beautiful!” – Stephanie Betzler, A&S ’13

BC bro says:
“Well this one is my favorite.  You can kind of see through it (smirks).  What’s that around her neck?  It kind of looks like a cape and I still don’t understand the little belt.” – PJ Concannon, A&S ’13

Trend #4 and #5:  Fur and Feathers as seen at Oscar de la Renta

Trend Report:  Fur and feathers are always a big part of fashion shows.  They are symbols of luxury and glamour that designers just can’t live without.  This year, fur was a large part of Oscar de la Renta’s collection and feathers accented much of Monique Lhuillier’s collection.

BC beauties say:
“She kind of looks like a lamb.  Without the headpiece it would definitely be better, but even then I’m not sure I like the bottom half of the dress.  The whole look is a little too Bo Peep slash bleached-out peacock for me.” – Elaina Donofrio, A&S ’13

“This piece is kind of cool – reminds me of the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia.  I like the fur and feather trend though, but it has to be done very carefully otherwise it ends up looking horribly gaudy.” – Stephanie Betzler, A&S ’13

BC bro says:
“WOW… she looks like a q-tip!!!  It’s like a swan outfit or maybe a baby bonnet with the head thing.  I think this is something that even fashion people would laugh at.” – PJ Concannon, A&S ’13

These top trends from NY Fashion Week elicited responses ranging from awe to laughter.  Whether these trends are wearable or not, they were definitely buzzworthy.  The difference between guys and girls when watching fashion shows was summed up best by one of our bros, PJ Concannon.  “Girls look at the clothes, and guys look at the girls (models).”  So now we know what BC beauties and bros think about Fall 2011 trends!
