After watching their hilarious lip dub video to the current pop anthem “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, I instantly wanted to become best friends with the “6 Hungry Dudes” behind the masterpiece. With their superb dance moves and creative use of props, I knew I had to meet them. They seemed like an awesome group of guys who knew how to have a good time. Upon meeting them, they did not let me down. But there is much more to these “6 Hungry Guys” than just their fun-loving side. They are easy to talk to, down-to-earth, and made me feel so welcome sitting in on their family dinner, accompanied by a soundtrack of Michael Bublé. And lucky for us Collegiettes, 3 of the 6 are single. So learn all about our 6 new BC campus crushes… I mean celebs.
Names?
Bryan, Dan, Mikey T, Mike, Matt, and Emmett (Matt and Emmet unfortunately weren’t in the interview)
Year?
Class of 2012
Who came up with the name “6 Hungry Dudes”?
Mikey T: We were ordering food for the Super Bowl and we called into Wings Over Brookline about a week in advance. I called but wasn’t exactly sure how many people we were going to have here. When I was on the phone with the guy and I said “Yeah uhhhhh how much food do you think we should get for like 12 hungry dudes?” For some reason they thought that was funny. Well Matt specifically thought it was funny.
Bryan: But there were only six of us in the video so we had to cut it down to “Six Hungry Dudes”.
Dan: If you can see our faces in the video we really are hungry… hungry for success. Hungry for fame.
So there were no other names you were debating between?
Mikey T: (jokingly) It was either that or Backstreet Boys 2.
Bryan: No that was the very first one.
Bryan: That was the first one and we were kind of like lets do it.
Mike: It was kind of fate… we all just knew.
So talk me through the time prior to the video… was it spur of the moment? Was it planned? What was the conversation that happened before?
Mike: One night Me, Mike and Matt were back earlier than the rest of the guys. This was like two or three in the morning. We were about to go to bed but we were all hanging out in his room [Mikey T] and were just listening to the song [“Call Me Maybe”]. Those are the black and white scenes where there are just three of us. But we locked the door because we didn’t want anyone to see us and then the rest of the boys were knocking on the door so I was like alright you’re allowed to come in but you’re not allowed to make fun of us and then it just kid of happened and just kind of took off from it.
Bryan: Because originally Justin Bieber did what we did and it was a hit amongst the roommates.
Mike: Yeah his video had come out just the day before.
Bryan: So we were talking and we were like this would be so funny if we did this ourselves and then we all came back one night and we said “I think it’s time” and it just happened.
How do you think your video compares to the Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez one?
Mikey T: I heard it was better!
Mike: I heard a couple people say they showed their mom both and they liked ours better.
What does yours have that the other one doesn’t?
Mike: Six Hungry Dudes.
Mikey T: Kids over eighteen.
Dan: Harpoons.
Mikey T: One of the best electric guitar solos in history.
Mike: Safe sex.
Explain the props to me.
Mike: Well I think we all just yelled, “Get a couple of props,” and that’s what we did.
There was no real directing of any kind given. We just kind of picked things up off the floor and ran with it. For example, I was like oh there’s a toothbrush; I’m going to brush my teeth.
Mikey T: I think it’s the most creative he’s ever been
Dan: Yeah and it wasn’t even his toothbrush.
And the harpoon?
Bryan: See, not many people realize it’s a harpoon which is interesting.
Mike: I don’t even know how we have that…
Dan: One of our roommates found it in a dump or something and just thought it was cool.
I read a tweet this morning that said “Call Me Maybe” is the love song of our generation. Thoughts?
Mikey T: Personally I would say no for me. I’d like to go a little deeper than that for a love song I think. I’m kind of an emotional person.
Mike: Yeah I think we all are.
Bryan: We are all very emotional people.
Dan: Very deep, very deep people.
Mikey T: “Call Me Maybe” was a way to get in touch with our artsy side, more so than our love side I think. See it can’t really be a love song. It pisses me off because she misses him so bad… but she just met him. I don’t really understand that.
Dan: Yeah we don’t really understand the lyrics.
Mike: We’re really confused…
Bryan: But guys, she missed him so, so bad.
Mikey T: She doesn’t even know who he is though… it makes no sense.
Mike: And watching the original video didn’t help figure out the lyrics. The guy in the original video just mows her lawn. But we were disgusted that the Bieber wasn’t in it so we didn’t even watch the whole thing.
So what would be the love song of our generation then?
Dan: Everything by Michael Bublé
Bryan: No, Rueben Studdard’s “Sorry for 2004” – that’s the love song of our generation.
If a girl said to you, “Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here’s my number, so call me, maybe?”… would it work?
Dan: Works every time on me.
Mike: Yupp.
Dan: Everytime.
Mikey T: I can’t promise anything. At this point, I don’t really know if I could take it seriously. But before this whole craze, yeah probably. But she would also have to have her number in her hand on paper.
Bryan: See I like an aggressive woman, I would want her to say call me DEFINITELY.
I often sign the lyrics wrong and say “so call me, baby.” Was Carly Rae Jepson right in saying “call me maybe,” or should she have come on stronger and said “call me, baby”?
Bryan: OHHHHH… I like that one a little more.
Mikey T: I like that one more, too.
Mike: There’s no messing around with that.
Dan: Oooooo scandalous.
Mike: But I think the “maybe” is what makes it so good. If she said “call me, baby” it wouldn’t have been the same.
Dan: No it’s old news.
Mikey T: That makes sense. “Call me maybe” kind of leaves you unsure of what’s going to happen next.
What is your view on girls making the first move?
Mike: All about it.
Mikey T: Like it.
Dan: All about it.
Or are you more traditional in the sense that guys should always make the first move?
Bryan: No, because I have to admit, I’m kind of a pussy when it comes to making the first move so if they bring it on, that’s a lot better.
Mike: See that’s why “call me, baby” could be too forceful. But a “call me maybe” is like maybe she’s just letting it out there that she’s kind of uncomfortable too.
Mikey T: I think it’s turned too much where it has to be the guy these days, there’s just no middle ground. Girls play hard to get too much. It’s like, come back down to earth.
Dan: There are so many games we play.
Mikey T: But you don’t have to play it.
Dan: It’s like should I send this text, it’s all a whole big debate.
Mike: But don’t respond too quickly!
Mikey t: See exactly! There’s a precise form. You have the male on one side and the female on the other side, and one sent text can completely shift things. If you respond too late, if you don’t say the right thing… there are too many variables. It shouldn’t be like that.
Dan: It’s a very thin line you have to walk down to reach that success, whatever it may be, whatever your goals may be in the relationship.
There’s a line in the song that says “You took your time with the call,
I took no time with the fall.” If a girl were to give you her number, how long would you wait to call?
Mikey T: 30 seconds.
Mike: What are we talking like during the day, at night? What day?
Say it’s a Friday night and you meet a girl at a party and she gives you her number.
Dan: I’d call her Saturday night.
Bryan: I’ll tell you a little anecdote. I was at a bar and this is the best move anyone has ever pulled and I am dating the woman as we speak. I gave her my number and I walked away and literally thirty seconds later she texted me saying that my butt looked great in the jeans I was wearing. I was hooked from that point on so I would say, although I wouldn’t do that to a girl, there’s no real need to wait.
Mikey T: I think there’s no real reason [to have to wait]. If she gave you the number, then we shouldn’t have to think that we have to wait a week to call. But that’s what it’s become and it makes no sense.
Dan: It’s a shame
Mikey T: It’s a damn shame.
Mike: It sickens me.
You guys have wonderful dance moves… any training?
Bryan: I’m the captain of Sexual Chocolate actually, but in the video you can’t really tell. I don’t really know what was happening to me that night.
Dan: The rest of us were winging it.
Mikey T: Well I’m from New Jersey so I’ve learned a few moves down there.
As seniors, what advice do you have for things that everyone at BC should do?
Mikey T: You have to do the Notre Dame trip. That was one of the most fun weekends at BC.
Mike: For sure, that was the best trip.
Dan: Definitely RV to ND.
Bryan: Also, just doing things outside of your comfort zone. Like I had never stepped before and I joined Sexual Chocolate. Just doing things where you would never get the opportunity again.
Mike: And get off campus a little bit, go into the city.
Dan: (laughing) Stay away from O’Neill.
What are you going to miss most about the Heights?
Dan: The Baja chicken
Bryan: No, I’m more of a Honey Q kind of guy. I’m going to miss that a lot.
Dan: So just foods in general…
Bryan: But really, just being able to do this every night and have a nice meal with great roommates with great conversation.
Mikey T: Definitely the roommates.
Bryan: And being able to film a “6 Hungry Dudes” video.
Mike: Yeah at 4 o’clock in the morning…
How exactly did the video making happen:
Mike: It was filmed at 4 o’clock in the morning and done and edited by 8:00am the next morning.
Dan: We did like 5 takes and that was it and then Matt, leader of film club, edited it… he flirted with a film minor once.
Any future video plans?
Bryan: We tossed it around a little bit.
Dan: Yeah we talked about doing a sequel, but we haven’t found a good song yet.
Mike: It’s all behind the song. If we did “We Found Love” the second it came out, that could have been the same kind of deal. You need something that is catchy and timing is key.
Mikey T: Yeah, we did this video before everyone really knew the song.
Mike: We knew if we were going to do it, we had to do it right away.
Bryan: We heard the song and we said we have to do this either now or its going to be too late.
Mike: The craze probably won’t last long so we had to do it quick.
Ben: I hope so. I can’t stand that song anymore…
Mike: I don’t know, I still like it.
Mikey T: Yeah I still kind of enjoy it.
Bryan: The problem is we listened to it so much before everyone else did, and now everyone else is starting to listen to it now.
Mike: Like last night they played it at the bar and everyone was like looking at us to do something.
Have people recognized you on campus?
Mike: I’ve been giggled at in the library…
Mikey T: Once in a while you walk by someone and they just look at you and you’re like I have no idea who you are but like you kind of know they know who you are.
Mike: I’ve gotten two texts from people whose numbers I didn’t have, and they were people from like years before.
Bryan: Someone from my elementary school inboxed me and said “I saw your video it was really funny… by the way can you hook me up with one of those guys?” I never responded.
Favorite song at the moment:
Bryan and Dan: B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast) by Rick Ross
Mikey T and Mike: Física O Química
What do you want the girls of BC to know?
Girls of BC, call us maybe?
