The Forgotten Wardrobe: Workout Wear

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

As I look to change my wardrobe each season to accommodate the crazy weather Boston has to offer, I often overlook the one part of my wardrobe that could greatly use some change: my workout wardrobe.  We all are guilty of looking over the spring catalogs of our favorite stores rather than our assigned reading for class and spending hours choosing just what new pieces we want to add to complete our closets.  As I look at my workout wardrobe now, I see pairs of over-washed yoga pants (trust me these are not the type that guys are always raving about), faded T-shirts and an old pair of Nike sneakers from 9th grade.  With the approach of spring there are some great ways to incorporate this year’s spring trends into your workout wardrobe that may just lead you to visit the Plex more often or if your like me, it may just inspire you to venture there for the first time this semester.

Here are three easy ways to spice up your workout wardrobe!

Color, Color, Color!

The easiest way to spice up your workout clothes is to add a few colorful pieces.  (Those pops of color, just may get you noticed by that hot guy you watch lift weights as you workout on the elliptical.)  Now I am not saying go color crazy because no one wants to be blinded by a head-to-toe neon ensemble as they workout, but adding one piece of color to your workout outfit can make all the difference.  This is not limited to just tops, it extends to every piece of clothing that goes into your workout outfit: your socks, headbands, underwear, sports bra, and yoga pants are all fair game.

This pair of Lululemon yoga pants even allows you to choose how colorful you want to be on any given day at the Plex.

And they’re reversible; how awesome is that?

Accessories

A really inexpensive way to change up a small aspect of your workout wardrobe is to invest in some new accessories.  We all do it for our day-to-day wardrobe so why not your workout wardrobe!  A new headband is practical and a perfect way to incorporate color in a smaller way.  A new gym bag can definitely be the source of inspiration to make the trek to the Plex (regardless of where you live, it will always be a “trek”).

Sneakers

Throw away those worn, outdated sneakers you have had since the 9th grade and invest in a brand new pair.  While they might make quite the dent in your wallet, they will definitely be worth it.  Not only do they add a pop of color if you so choose but the support offered by new sneakers is unparalleled.  Companies like Nike are making it increasingly easier for you to get exactly what you want and the possibilities are endless.  If my new pair of Nikes got me to run the Res, then trust me when I say a new pair of sneakers can be quite the motivator.

While we often overlook the serious updating that our workout wardrobes need, investing in some new items could be greatly beneficial.  Let’s face it spring break is on its way and I know I haven’t seen the Plex in over a month, except for maybe from my table at Hillside!  So put down the J.Crew catalog and either do some online workout clothes shopping or hit Newbury Street and the Prudential to give your workout wardrobe the attention it deserves.
