Flirting: Expectation vs. Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We would all like to believe that flirting comes as easy to us as booty shaking does to Beyonce, but such fantasies do not always grace us in real life. In fact, flirting can often go very (very, very) wrong. Especially when you’re trying really hard… go figure! Unless you are absolutely perfect (like Queen Bey), you can share a laugh at how you thought you were flirting and what you were actually doing.

Expectation: Everyone stares as you flawlessly walk by.

Reality: Walking was never really your thing.

Expectation: You eat like a princess.

Reality: But princesses are never actually hungry.

Expectation: You have perfected the hair-flip.

Reality: But trying to look cute and move your hair at the same time is really a lot to ask.

Expectation: Dancing is a natural-born talent to you.

Reality: But then again maybe mom was right about those dance lessons.

Expectation: You’re a hilarious, cute, and sweet flirtin’ machine.

Reality: Words jumble out and you are contemplating running or playing dead.

Expectation: Your flirty gestures make him sweat.

Reality: You probably should just not even try.

Don’t worry, it’ll get better. And I mean even if it doesn’t, there’s probably someone who thinks your social mess is pretty cute. Right?!
