Five Old School Rom Coms Everyone Loves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Every girl, and lots of guys, enjoy a great romantic comedy on a weekend night or after a long day of classes. Of course, the newer movies like Dear John, Friends with Benefits, and Twilight are all great, but some of the best romantic movies were made before our time, and that can even make them better. Here are five classics that you won’t regret watching:

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This story chronicles the long friendship of Harry and Sally, who met in college and later reunite. They question whether men and women can truly be just friends, displaying all of the flaws and concerns that come with this question.

Say Anything (1989)

After high school graduation, the unsure kickboxer Lloyd Dobler goes after his crush, the overachieving valedictorian Diane Court. Dealing with the pressures of her overprotective father, their futures, and more, Lloyd and Diane struggle to make their relationship work before she leaves for college in England.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

It’s Samantha Baker’s sixteenth birthday and the eve of her sister’s wedding. Samantha has a crush on the most popular boy in her school, Jake Ryan, while the biggest geek, Ted, has a crush on her. After a school dance and a crazy party at Jake’s house, everyone discovers new things about themselves and those around them.

Breakfast Club (1985)

A group of very different teenagers end up spending a whole Saturday together in detention. Brought together in this unusual circumstance, they share more with each other than any of them would have thought, and have very similar problems and feelings. Although it is not necessarily a love story, this movie teaches lessons about seeing past people’s appearances, and it’s essential to see while you’re still young.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

At summer resort with her family, Francis “Baby” Houseman, a well-off daddy’s girl, discovers another side to the wealthy resort: what the workers call “dirty dancing.” After developing a crush on the dance instructor, Johnny Castle, he teaches her how to dance and Baby has to fill in for his partner. Between her overprotective doctor father and dancing with Johnny, Baby tries to make everyone happy. This movie is a must-see based on Patrick Swayze’s looks alone.

So, take some nights off, enjoy these classic movies, and appreciate what life and romance was like in the 80s. (Can you imagine dating without texting?) P.S. Make sure to call your mom and tell her you watched them, she’ll love it.
