Fall According to a LA Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I hate to admit it, but my least favorite season is fall. All the pretty colors, the pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider, the boots and scarves and vests? It doesn’t do it for me. And I guess I should explain why I don’t like fall. See, I’m from Los Angeles, a city where the fall often times means the warmest weather (I don’t know why, but I was consistently going to the beach until November). People love going home to LA over Thanksgiving because it is almost an automatic that it will be in the 90’s.

Now lets also make something clear. I know what fall is. Just because the palm trees around my house don’t change color doesn’t mean I don’t know that other trees change color. I have friends that count down to PSL day at Starbucks. People wear boots and scarves in LA, so I would expect nothing else from people at BC. But there were some things that I definitely did not expect and honestly don’t really understand.

1. The weather

Now that probably sounds really stupid and I’ll admit typing that out just now felt pretty stupid. But I’m serious here. While fall can be pretty, it can also be freezing cold. In LA, the weather rarely dips below 55, and when it does, it’s only in the morning (I had an extra class my senior year at 7 am and I would regularly get into my car with the outside thermometer at 40). But it doesn’t stay at 40! I would be freezing if it was anything below 55 and for some weird reason I thought that there wasn’t going to be that big of a difference between 55 degrees and 40 degrees. Wrong! I would leave my dorm in a long sleeve shirt, sweater, sweatshirt, jeans, long socks, boots, scarf, and sometimes if I was feeling really desperate, a vest. You laugh now, but it is horrible.

2. Vests

I must of missed a memo last year because there was one day when I walked out of my dorm and suddenly every girl I saw was wearing a vest. Despite my confusion on the validity of wearing a vest as an outer garment, I’m still confused about what constitutes “vest weather”. It doesn’t keep your arms warm, so it has to be somewhat warm out, and yet I see people wearing vests when it’s in the 40’s. Maybe it’s because 40 degrees means freezing to me, but I’m confused.

3. Apple Picking

I honestly don’t understand how this is fun. You’re standing all day in the cold picking apples. Is there something extra about this experience that I’m missing? Now, I like apples just as much as the next person, but honestly that just does not sound fun. And yet people do it every year! I’ve seen at least 10 people who have posted on Instagram about going home for Columbus Day weekend and going apple picking. CAB puts on an apple picking activity every year, and it sells out. LA doesn’t have apple picking. If you want to go avocado picking you can, but I don’t think it’s that enjoyable.

Maybe at the end of the day, I am just an LA girl who still needs to get used to the traditions of fall in the New England chill!
