Everything You Need to Know About This Season’s Holiday TV Specials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s that time of year again! It seems that the start of December truly begins the spread of Christmas cheer and holiday spirit. No matter what station you flip to on your TV, there is some sort of holiday special. With so many channels and specials, how can you be certain that you won’t miss anything? Follow this guide and you will make the most of the holiday television season.

ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas

ABC Family’s Christmas programming starts December 1st and continues all the way through Christmas day, with a different holiday movie every night!

NBC

Wednesday, December 4th at 8/7c is Christmas in Rockefeller Center with the lighting of the world’s most famous Christmas tree and many stars performing holiday songs. After watching this special, you can catch the SNL Christmas Special at 10/9c and catch all of the hilarious Christmas sketches. You can see everything from Adam Sandler’s “Hanukkah Song” to Alec Baldwin’s “Schweddy Balls.”

Thursday, December 5 at 8/7c is The Sound of Music: Live! for one night only, starring Carrie Underwood as Maria and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp. Don’t miss this!!

Tuesday, December 11th is Kelly Clarkson’s Cautionary Christmas Music Tale. Clarkson just released a 2013 holiday album titled Wrapped in Red, so you can look forward to some special performances of her latest songs.

Tuesday, December 18th at 10/9c is Michael Bublé’s 3rd Annual Christmas Special. I’m not sure that anyone can sing Christmas songs better than this guy, so make sure you watch this.

Saturday, December 14th at 8/7c and Tuesday Christmas Eve at 8/7c is the famous It’s a Wonderful Life movie showing. This is a tradition that has been continued in my own family for years!

The CW

Wednesday, December 18th is The iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2013 at Madison Square Garden. It will be televised, with performances from Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke (together again?!), Pitbull, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Fall Out Boy, Selena Gomez, Enrique Iglesias, Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo, and Austin Mahone. So basically, watch this and dance with your friends!

ABC

Monday, December 2nd is the famous A Charlie Brown Christmas at 8 p.m. Following this is the CMA Country Christmas at 9 p.m., hosted by Jennifer Nettles with many performances from other country music stars.

Monday, December 9th at 8 p.m. is the famous Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town and then at 9 p.m. is The Great Christmas Light Fight.

Monday, December 16th at 8 p.m. is the Disney Prep & Landing animated special followed by Prep & Landing 2: Naughty vs. Nice at 9 p.m. Although somewhat new, this is a must see for all you Disney fans out there. This special is a more modern take on Santa’s elves and follows their struggles to deliver all of the presents on time!

Sunday, December 21st is I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown. Who doesn’t love Charlie Brown?

Monday, December 23rd   at 8:30 p.m. is A Chipmunk Christmas featuring the lovely “chipmunk-ed” voices of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.

Tuesday, December 24th  at 8:30 p.m. is Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch.

Wednesday, December 25th at 10 a.m. is the annual Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Always a fun one to watch!

Fox

Monday, December 16th at 9 p.m. (and Wednesday, December 25th at 8 p.m.) is Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas followed by Dreamworks Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury at 9:30 p.m. There is nothing funnier than watching Scrat the squirrel from Ice Age try to save his acorn!

Friday, December 20th at 8 p.m. is Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown. Nothing says the holidays like a Charlie Brown animated flick!

If you follow this holiday TV guide this December, you won’t miss any of the action and will be able to have the most enjoyable holiday season yet! Watch these specials with family and friends, and channel your inner Christmas cheer!

Enjoy!
