“Do it for the Insta”: The (Basic) Stages of Posting that “Perfect” Instagram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We’ve all had those moments. The one where we just hiked a mountain (athletic, am I right?) and want all our followers to see that breathtaking (and obviously, edited) view.  Or all those times where we are having a great time partying and obviously want all our friends back home to see how fun and exciting our lives are. Or what about birthdays? Can’t forget those birthday Instagrams, expressing our love for our (25) closest best friends.  Or a good TBT that shows all our followers that we, in fact, were the cutest children back in the day.

Here are the stages (and sometimes struggles) of posting that perfect Insta.

1. Capturing the Moment

Gassongram? Sunset on the res?  Studying abroad? Tailgating on a Saturday? You name it. If we are doing something fun or see something beautiful, we want all our followers to see it. Because if you didn’t Instagram it, did it even really happen?

2. Planning and Editing

Here the struggle becomes real. Valencia or X Pro II or maybe, Sierra? So many filters, yet only one picture.

3. Captioning

We all know the caption rakes in the likes. It’s a simple mathematical equation: the better the caption, the more likes you will receive. Simple enough, am I right?

4. Maybe Add a Location, too?

Oh, we cannot forget the location. Location is key and often references an inside joke or the actual place. Like real estate agents say, “location, location, location.”

5. Getting Your Friend’s Approval

Because let’s be honest, if your friend doesn’t like it, then most definitely that cute kid from class won’t like it either.

6. Timing

You can’t post too early or too late. Here is where the saga continues. Posting during the highest times of procrastination or right before bed are always the go-to times because, to be honest, that’s when we all are on our phones.

7. The Waiting Begins

The photo has been edited, captioned, located, and given approval. Now it’s time to share the post. You think to yourself, “This photo totally deserves lots of likes, it’s such a good one.”

8. Refreshing or Ignoring

We all know there are two types of people in the Instagram world: the refresher and the ignorer. If you are the refresher, you’re the one who watches each and every like happen. Never going away from the app. Checking and refreshing every single minute, assuring that your like to minute ratio is big.

Then, there is the ignorer. You’re the one who can’t even look at your phone. You delete the app to resist temptation, wanting to just see the likage after an hour. Let’s be honest, we all know know you fall into one of the two categories.

9. Getting that Like

You’re totally kidding yourself if you don’t have those few people who you wait for and hope will like it. A past hook-up? That hot guy from class, maybe? You name it. If your BFF hasn’t liked it, you’ll be sure to be shooting her a text.

Here you have it, the (basic) stages of posting an Instagram. Stop lying to yourself; you know you go through these steps, too. Here’s to making everyone think we have the most exciting lives (even if a little editing may be involved)!
