DIY Dorm-Friendly Decorations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Want to transform your dorm into a home? Of course you do! Your dorm room (or off-campus apartment) is going to be your home for the next year. So why not make it feel like one? I’ll let you in on a secret…you can do it all by yourself! The beginning of the semester is always hectic and decorating your dorm room may be the last thing on your mind. But, if you take the time decorate, it will definitely be worth it in the long run. And once those midterms and papers start rolling in, home is exactly what you’re going to want it to feel like. So, here are some great DIY ideas to decorate your dorm room.

For Empty Wall Space:

Spoon Mirror
Mirrors are said to brighten up rooms. So why not brighten up the mirror too? All you need to make this Spoon Mirror are plastic spoons, a piece of cardboard, and a hot glue gun. The best part is that you can choose whichever color spoons you want to match the color scheme of your room.

There are a bunch of fun DIY ideas on this website that don’t necessarily have to do with decorating your dorm room but are still fun (#1, 2, 6, 7, …). http://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/31-insanely-easy-and-clever-diy-projects. But check out number 17 for a great way to hang your necklaces. Number 23 is a cool way to turn inexpensive frames into chalkboard signs. I also (secretly) love number 15 – a great way to glitz up anything!

Curtain Rod Hanging Frames
This is such an adorable way to hang pictures – with a curtain rod and ribbon! Take an old curtain rod from home and those picture frames you never use to make this awesome room decoration.

Book Page Lamp Shade Cover/Canvas
If you are the creative teacher-type (like me) you are going to love this idea. Take apart your favorite children’s book (or use pages from magazines or small posters) and put it on your wall with mod podge and a canvas! And even though it says it’s for toddlers’ rooms, it can be for young adult rooms too!

To Help You Stay Organized:

Memo Board
These boards are not only practical, but also super cute. Plus, I absolutely love the glitter. Just take plain corkboards and paint them! Perfectly simple!

Keep Calm and Print On Posters
I’m a sucker for anything “Keep Calm and…(fill in the blank)” because I was abroad in England last semester. Print out these posters and stick them all around your room!

Cork Calendar
This is a great way to stay organized and to fill up some of that empty wall space! You can even buy smaller corkboards and put them up together to create a bigger one. I love this idea to stay organized and decorate your room simultaneously.

For the Holidays:

Paper Pumpkins
These little pumpkins are so adorable! They’re great to decorate your room for the fall, and they’re easy to make too. All you need is some colored paper and pipe cleaners. How easy is that?

Pumpkin Rolls
What a perfect idea for tissue rolls! These are so cute. All you need is some fun orange fabric, a brown paper bag and more pipe cleaners; another super simple idea to make your room homier.
