Diary of a BC Girl: How to Plex

I hate the first few weeks of a new semester.  You may be wondering why, seeing as how classes have just begun so there isn’t that much work and seeing all of your friends is fun and exciting.  However, I loathe the first few weeks of classes because everything seems to be 100% more congested than any other time during the semester.  For example, the Plex is infinitely more crowded during the first few weeks of classes, making it nearly impossible to get in at least a somewhat decent workout.

I’m an avid spinner.  I go to spin class at least three days a week, if not more.  My roommate and I even went and bought spin shoes last semester (yes, we went so far as to install our own cleats, which almost led to the end of our spin days, but that’s beside the point).  Along with going to spin class, I enjoy working out using either my P90-X app or my Nike Training Club app.

At this point, you may be wondering why I’m going through the trouble of telling you my workout routine.  Here’s your answer: I’m one of the many BC girls who goes to the Plex on a regular basis, so if you’re new to this whole working out business, that’s great, congratulations!  Now, read on so that you too can learn some Plex etiquette.

Sign up for classes that require it… No, it is NOT a suggestion.
Don’t get me wrong.  I’m really happy that people want to try spin class; however, I’m less than thrilled by the fact that when I show up to class after having signed up that there are no bikes left.  I absolutely HATE having to have the instructor read off the list and honestly, it’s just embarrassing if you have to be the awkward one who gets off the bike and walk out.  So, to avoid the humiliation and plethora of dirty looks, make sure to sign up.  You have to sign up in person the day before the class you want to attend, or you can call the day of the class to sign up.

At peak hours, utilize the 30 minute rule.
I understand that cardio is important; but, if you notice that there seems to be a TON of people around, chances are at least one of them is waiting for an elliptical, cross-trainer, treadmill, or any other cardio machine.  Get off after 30 minutes!  I’m not saying that you should have to jeopardize your workout, but it’s common courtesy that if you notice people are waiting, you don’t stay on the elliptical until you finish the latest issues of both Vogue AND Cosmopolitan (and to be honest, if you’re reading both of these, chances are you’re not really working out as hard as you should be).  Trust me, you can burn as many calories in 30 intense minutes as you can in 2 hours at an extremely slow, leisurely pace.

Don’t hold on to equipment that you’re not using.
I’m all for saving your place.  I also understand that you use different weights for different exercises, but if you have the 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 20 pound weights out, and you’re not using them ALL at the same time, you really should consider putting a few of them back until you are ready to use them.  We all have busy lives, so to be able to get in and out of the gym is something that most people are hoping to achieve, which can be done so long as people are considerate of each other.

All and all, the best advice I can give is just be considerate of the people around you!  When you’re at the Plex remember that everyone there is in the same boat you’re in, they want to get in and get out and get on with their day.  So by just always being aware, you’re guaranteed to not only make everyone around you have a better experience at the gym, but you’ll be guaranteed a great workout too!
