Dad Jokes: The Story of “Hi Hungry, I’m Dad. It’s Nice to Meet You.”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Dad Jokes: We’ve heard them all. We hear them all the time. And we internally cringe while letting out a fake and half-hearted laugh. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason all Dads use the same jokes and all Dads think they are absolutely hilarious.

It gets to the point where you hear the Dad jokes so many times, you let out a groan followed by an exasperated “Dad!” before the punch line is even finished…if you can even call it that. Let’s start with one of the most notorious Dad Jokes of all time. You complain about some type of feeling, usually “I’m hungry” or “I’m tired and 9/10 times your Dad will respond with “Hi hungry” or “Hi tired” substitution the feeling as your temporary name. There must be some type of guidebook where Dads learn this one.

I don’t know about your dad, but my dad’s confidence in his humor seems to escalate in our text conversations. Maybe it’s because he has more than a couple seconds to reply with something that he finds is amusing.

This has to be one of the most utilized and infamous Dad jokes out there. While this joke may have made me laugh in the third grade, it now leaves me almost speechless. There was nothing else to do but allow my dad to know the extent of his dadness” which he takes as a compliment and an abnormally yellow thumbs up.

Here, my dad gets a little more creative by making fun of me. Because of my barely 5’0 height, my height or lack of it actually, is the center of a lot of his Dad jokes. But, he needs to be reminded that height is due to genetics, so he can be blamed for 50% of my shortness.

Another jab at my height, but if it makes him happy, then I guess I have to allow it.

And here, my dad takes it one step further and not only creates a group chat with my siblings to share his inventive wit, but adds in a picture. Corny, but original, so props to you, Dad!

As predictable and lame as Dad jokes are, they never fail to make me smile. Despite the roll of the eyes and the disapproving shake of the head, there is a guaranteed smile on my lips.

So next time your dad confidently sports one of his jokes, make him happy and let out a laugh (I know you can fake a real laugh), because it sure will make his day.
