I know it sounds crazy and completely against the norm, but I really hate Black Friday shopping. I’ve gone in years past with my cousins and mom, and haven’t been that impressed. Here are some reasons why I don’t participate in the biggest shopping day of the year:
1. It seems like each year the sales start a couple hours earlier. I remember being in elementary school and the “door-buster sales” would start at 9 A.M. That is a reasonable time, but 8 P.M on Thanksgiving night is not.
2. Thanksgiving should be a day spent with family, football, and way too much food, not planning shopping lists or leaving the family party early to get the best deals.
3. The exact same sales are available online aka I can sleep in, stay in my pajamas, shop online, and catch up on Grey’s Anatomy. Sounds infinitely better than staying up all night and dealing with the crowds.
4. Cyber Monday has fantastic sales as well, so four days later you can do the same thing as #3.
5. I like to spend Thanksgiving break seeing high school friends, not dealing with cranky people not getting deals at the mall.
6. Black Friday is the unofficial start to the holiday stress season; it means I need to start worrying about Christmas parties, decorating, booking flight tickets, studying for finals, planning New Year’s Eve, and frankly I don’t wanna worry about that until I have to.
7. Guaranteed I’m too tired from the food coma from Thanksgiving to get up any earlier than 11 AM that day.
8. I like making DIY and homemade gifts for my family and friends instead of buying things; it’s much cheaper and they will appreciate the time you put into it.
9. I don’t support stores that make their employees work on Thanksgiving night (see #1 and #2).
10. The after-Christmas sales are almost always better so I wait for those instead.
