Ahh, the 90s. The salad days, you might say. I picture 90s and I see wonderfully baggy pants in various bright colors, afternoons watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and some of the best incidents of musical wonder that our generation has been alive to encounter and enjoy. Obviously “oldies” music beats anything that’s on the radio today, and given my age (21), anything before ’00 can reasonably be labeled “old.” Break out your Skip-Its, ladies, because it’s about to get 90s hip up in here. If you’re lucky, maybe you can still listen to some of these jams on your Hit Clip.
Spice Girls, “Wannabe” (1996)
Classic lyric: “I wanna really really really wanna zigazig ha”
Why we love it: Spice Girls ruled the world in the 90s, and this song has been stuck in our heads for the past 18 years. You read that right. 18 years.
The Verve “Bittersweet Symphony” (1997)
Classic Lyric: “’Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life/Try to make ends meet/You’re a slave to money, then you die”
Why we love it: It’s a perfectly indulgent song that somehow makes us feel sad and happy at the same time. And that’s what all the best music does, doesn’t it?
Oasis “Wonderwall” (1995)
Classic Lyric: “Because maybe you’re gonna be the one that saves me/And after all, you’re my wonderwall”
Why we love it: It’s kind of depressing but totally uplifting at the same time. How is that possible? We don’t know but we aren’t asking any questions. Just put in on replay.
No Doubt “Don’t Speak” (1995)
Classic Lyric: “I know just what you’re sayin’/So please stop explaining/Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts”
Why we love it: It’s so catchy, and Gwen was even hotter than she is now (if that’s possible). Plus, No Doubt was the start of our semi-emo phase, and we can’t just forget that now that we’re fully adjusted adults.
Britney Spears “…Baby One More Time” (1999)
Classic Lyric: “I must confess/I still believe/When I’m not with you I lose my mind/Give me a sign/Hit me baby one more time”
Why we love it: This is maybe the best song of all time. That’s all that really needs to be said.
Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You” (1992)
Classic Lyric: “And I-I-I-I-I-I will always love you-u-u-u”
Why we love it: It’s the perfect song for almost any situation, including, but not limited to: morning shower, driving to school, post-breakup vent session, girl’s night, really terrible The Voice audition.
Blackstreet “No Diggity” (1996)
Classic Lyric: “East side to the west side/Pushing phat rides/It’s no surprise/She’s got tricks in the stash/Stacking up the cash”
Why we love it: Blackstreet is just kind of hilarious, but this song is somehow really good. And catchy.
Hanson “MMMBop” (1997)
Classic Lyric: “Mmmm bop, ba duba dop /Ba du bop, ba duba dop /Ba du bop, ba duba dop”
Why we love it: For a song that isn’t really about anything, Hanson sure made us feel like we were having a spiritual experience whilst listening to this song.
Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” (1999)
Classic Lyric: Tell me why/Ain’t nothin’but a heartache/Tell me why/Ain’t nothin’ but a mistake/Tell me why/I never wanna hear you say/I want it that way”
Why we love it: This is Backstreet Boys at their prime. Everything about this song (and the video) is so #classic, we can’t even.
Dave Matthews Band “Crash Into Me” (1996)
Classic Lyric: “Hike up your skirt a little more/And show your world to me/In a boy’s dream/In a boy’s dream”
Why we love it: “Crash” is low-key the sexiest song ever written. Tell me it doesn’t turn you on just a little bit.
MC Hammer “U Can’t Touch This” (1990)
Classic Lyric: “You can’t touch this/You can’t touch this/You can’t touch this”
Why we love it: Who doesn’t love MC Hammer? Plus: the pants. Oh, the pants!
TLC “Waterfalls” (1994)
Classic Lyric: “Don’t go chasing waterfalls/Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to/I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all/But I think you’re moving too fast”
Why we love it: TLC got a little lost after the 90s, so this is the best example of their talent. We miss them; we love them; we’re rooting for a reunion.
