The Beanpot Championship: Why You’d Be CRAZY to Miss Out!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

I recently came across a video that was apparently made to make me laugh.  It only ran 1:20 in length, and it was about the Beanpot, so I gave it a click.  Figuring it would feature some funny jokes mocking the four schools in good fun, I went in hopeful for some slapstick humor.  What I got instead, was a sad man who seemed to be mocking the Boston schools with little actual knowledge of Beantown culture.

In one of his opening lines, for example, he claimed that Boston area schools don’t care about college hockey throughout the year, until the Beanpot comes around and they all of a sudden love it.  Was he trying to be sarcastic?  Because if so, it totally failed and left me wanting to tap him on the shoulder and say, “Excuse me, sir, but college hockey is kind of a big deal in Boston, and yes, year-round.”  We’re talking sold-out student season tickets and seats filled with boisterous and dedicated fans.  Then when the great Beanpot rolls around, this same passionate crew excitedly makes its way to North Station, where the four green lines deliever thousands of students to the rink for the big showdown.

Oh, and did I mention that when mocking BC he did so in a Southern accent?  I expected preppy bro-culture jokes, but got hick-ville jokes about beer and b*tches instead.  But enough about his lackluster knowledge and humor, let’s talk Beanpot, because trust me when I say:  You want to be there this Monday night.

This Monday, Feb. 13, #1 Boston University will hit the ice, fervishly battling to take the Beanpot away from us, the #5 Eagles.  You heard right, BU currently ranks four spaces above us at the number one spot. Sure, rankings don’t matter that much… but it kind of rubs you the wrong way, doesn’t it?  Still kind of makes you nervous, huh?  Not to mention that our first two meetings with BU this season didn’t show us in the most positive light. Need I remind you of the 5-0 and 5-3 losses we suffered?  Thankfully, the third time proved charming, and we beat them 6-1.

Now tell me you don’t want to be at the Garden, amongst the most rowdy Superfans you will ever see at Boston College, watching the Eagles take on not only their biggest rival, but also the team that embarassed them so badly earlier in the season.  Not only that, but the Beanpot Championship is one of the most meaningful games in the hockey season and in Boston College athletics.

Get your tickets while you still can, BC, and tell your usual Monday night O’Neill study date that it’s time to get downtown and experience what it means to be a proud Boston College Superfan.  This is one of those “must-dos” before you graduate, so what are you waiting for?

I’ll see ya at the game!
