Ask HC BC: Alone on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Dear HC BC,

Not having a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day has never bothered me in the past.  I have really great friends who I usually do something with, and I’m not the super romantic type, anyways.  But something changed this year- all my friends got boyfriends.  Literally, both my roommates have boyfriends and most of my other friends are at least seeing someone.  I am the only one who doesn’t have a guy in her life.  My friends are constantly planning what they’re doing for the big day, comparing gift ideas, or asking me if I want them to set me up with someone.  Seriously, I am so over it.  How do I avoid all this without coming across as bitter?

– Alone on Valentine’s Day

Dear Alone on Valentine’s Day,

The first thing you should notice is that you have a group of friends who really care about your feelings.  Instead of getting upset when they ask to set you up with someone, realize that it is coming from a really good place.  That being said, I totally understand why you feel the way to do.  Valentine’s Day is one of the most hyped up holidays of the year, and it can be brutal to brave it alone.  As much as it might drive you crazy, I would show that you’re happy for your friends.  I would help them pick out gifts and be active in the conversations so that they don’t think you’re hurt.  That way, they’ll lighten up in terms of checking in on your feelings.  To make sure that you have a fun night, I would try to get some friends together who are also single.  It may seem as though you’re the only one without a guy, but I doubt that’s completely true.  If your best group of friends already has plans, reach out to some other friends.  Plan an awesome night of stuffing your face, watching trashy reality TV, and enjoying the sweatpants you wouldn’t be able to wear if you were on a date!

Good luck!

HC Love,

HC BC
