5 Ways to Pass the Time When You’re Bored Over Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

“Winter break is almost here!!!!!”  These five words have gotten me through these last few weeks, which were filled with a never-ending flood of projects, papers, and tests.  Oh my!

But luckily, by Thursday, break will officially begin for everyone!  And while the first two and a half weeks are always a whirlwind of holidays, catching up with old friends, and relishing in the fact that you can sleep for hours on end, by the third week, things can get a little boring.  Her Campus BC has come up with a few ways to pass the time when you’re bored on break.

Take a road trip with friends: Most people associate road trips with summer, but we dare you to grab a couple of close friends and hit the road during winter break!  Google a cool, out-of-the way restaurant you wouldn’t normally go to, or an outlet mall that takes forever to get to, grab your friends, and go.  It will be a new experience for everyone, plus you will get a lot of time to just catch up with high school friends who you won’t see until May!  Just make sure you check the weather beforehand… no one wants to drive in the snow!

Utilize Pinterest: Have you ever been procrastinating on Pintrest for hours, gawking at all of the cool arts and crafts projects and thinking “Wow that’s awesome, I so wish I had time to do that.”  Well, now you do!  Pintrest has pages of projects to choose from, ranging from nail art to collages that will keep you occupied for hours.  If you’re more of a baker than an artist, Pintrest has tons of pages on that too, including pages dedicated specifically to Christmas cookies!  I challenge you to use Pintrest for something other than a way to procrastinate this break!

Find your new favorite TV show: The fact that my favorite show, the show that I have been in a TV relationship with for the past five and a half years, Gossip Girl, ends on Monday has not quite hit me yet.  But I know that by the third week of break, the fact that my show is no longer there will finally sink in, and it will be time to move on.  I plan on watching every single episode of New Girl over break, and I hope you, too, will join me in finding a new TV show to call your own.  And the best part of TV on DVD means that it does not have to be a show that’s on now!  Did you ever see a random episode of House, Friends, Gilmore Girls, Will and Grace etc. and think, “I should really watch this show more”?  Now you have hours and hours to do so!  Ask for the first season of a TV show for Christmas and get hooked!

Read a book: I know, after you have done nothing but read, read, read for three weeks, one of the last things you want to do is pick up another book.  But not only will getting lost in a good book distract you from boredom, it will also make you realize how great reading can be when it doesn’t have to be for psych, or history, or chemistry, or any subject for that matter.  Whether it’s a new book or an old favorite (I personally enjoy rereading Harry Potter over long breaks) reading is a great way to relax and pass the time.

Have a “Family Day”: Winter break is the only break during the school year where you don’t have to worry about homework or tests, and so you have time to really be with your family.  This could also be the only extended period of time you have with your siblings who are in college, who, if your like me and one of my brothers, will not have the same spring break as you.  Take advantage of this time and go to a movie with your siblings, or spend the day shopping with mom, or go down to your dad’s office to grab lunch.  You are with friends 24/7 in college; make sure you take a day, or at least a few hours, to spend time exclusively with the people who’ve known you the longest and are always there for you.  I guarantee you won’t be bored.

We hope you have a fun, fabulous, and stress-free break!
