5 Ways to Decorate Your Dorm for Free

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Decorating your room/apartment is both an exciting and an expensive thing. We all want to have cute and classy looking cribs, but often it costs a bit above the average college student’s budget. So here are 5 free ways to decorate your dorm and make it personalized.

Hang Your Necklaces on Your Wall

This both saves you from the hassle of untangling your necklaces if they lie in a clump in your jewelry box, and is a unique decoration. Also, when you are getting ready, you have your favorite necklaces right in front of you to pick out the perfect one.

Cut Up Old Magazines

In my room, we cut out our names to put up on our sides, but you can do almost anything with this. Create a quote wall, cut out fun shapes, or just create a cool collage.

Use Old Ribbon To Create Patterns

I know printing out all of the pictures that lie over the ribbon costs money, but a cool way to use up the gift-wrap left over from Christmas is to create a pattern. This works especially well if you have a large white space that needs to be filled.

Make Origami

This takes a more creative person, but thankfully I happen to have one in my suite. Making interesting origami shapes and sticking them on the walls creates a unique look that is handmade for you.

Hang Your Scarf

This idea might be overplayed at times, but I still think that it is a great way to decorate large empty wall space and it is something personal and most likely completely different from anything anyone else has.

So the next time you are thinking about buying another Audrey Hepburn poster or picking out a cliché sign to put up in your room, think about some of these options that will save you money and express your own style!
