You know all the classics: Rudolph, Frosty, Jingle Bells, Winter Wonderland. Pop some gingerbread cookies in the oven, throw on your ugly sweater, and play these 10 lesser-known songs to get yourself in the Christmas spirit.
1. Ho Ho Hopefully – The Maine
Fans of this indie pop band know this song is a Christmas season staple (my roommate always plays it on December 1st, because those are the first words in the song). It’s a cute twist on the classic Christmas love song with adorable lyrics like “We go together like winter and this sweater.” Crank this up while you’re baking cookies with your crush.
2. Merry, Merry, Merry Frickin’ Christmas – Frickin’ A
This song is a must-listen for every Red Sox fan. Written after their incredible 2004 World Series victory, this song is basically a roast of the Yankees…every Bostonian’s dream. Pull our your baseball hats and grab some beers and it’ll basically feel like playoff season is happening again. Maybe if you listen to it loud enough, you’ll forget how horrible last season was.
3. Baby It’s Cold Outside – Glee Cast
Okay, so it’s not technically a “lesser-known” song, but it’s a version that doesn’t get as much airplay as it should. Not only does it celebrate non-traditional couples, Darren Criss and Chris Colfer are fantastic and their harmonies are on point. This is a perfect song for decorating your room with your roomies.
4. The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth – Bing Crosby and David Bowie
A personal favorite of my mom, this song always puts me in the Christmas spirit. Bing Crosby is a Christmas giant and his songs are instant classics. The addition of David Bowie puts an interesting spin on an oft-played Christmas tune. Snuggle up with a big blanket and a warm cup of cocoa and let this song soothe your finals woes.
5. What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? – Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Everyone’s favorite quirky non-couple teamed up to cover this Nancy Wilson song. Though it’s not directly Christmas-related, New Year’s is right around the corner, and while you’re flirting with your crush, this song might be the perfect way to secure that NYE kiss.
6. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid
This song was created as a way to raise funds to support the people of Ethiopia who were struggling with a famine. Although the premise doesn’t sound too cheery, it’s a beautiful song recorded by a conglomeration of famous British musicians. This song will make your huge paper seem like way less of a big deal, which might help you tackle it faster. It was also rereleased in 2014 as a way to fundraise for the Ebola crisis, and that version features One Direction, which is always a plus.
7. Love’s in Our Hearts on Christmas Day – *NSYNC and Rosie O’Donnell
Why yes, Rosie O’Donnell does have a Christmas album. Why yes, I own it. It’s perfect sing-along material. This collab with *NSYNC makes my Backstreet-Boy-loving heart a bit sad, but it’s a beautiful song with a great message. Share the love with your mom, your roomies, your professors, your dog…whoever needs it.
8. My Only Wish (This Year) – Britney Spears
Another 90s throwback for ya. Everyone’s favorite pop queen kills this original song about wanting love for Christmas. Jam to this with your roommates or throw it on your next party playlist.
9. Somewhere in My Memory – John Williams
This beautiful choir song is on the Home Alone soundtrack, so listening to it may give you flashbacks to one of the best Christmas movies around. Though there are few lyrics, it still hits home in a way that’ll make you feel like a little kid on Christmas morning. Put it on in the background while you open presents to bring some of the magic back to Christmas day.
10. Heat Miser/Snow Miser – A Year Without a Santa Claus
One of the best songs ever from one of the best Christmas movies ever, simple as that.
