10 Best Fall Desserts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

It’s that time of year again when the leaves are turning color, the air is getting crisper and the clothes are getting thicker. Fall is one of the best times of year because the weather is not quite freezing yet and it also doesn’t leave you dripping with sweat. But besides the beauty of autumnal nature, fall is my favorite season because of the delicious foods that come out this time of year. There are so many amazing options to choose from that I’m going to narrow down a few of my favorites to get you started on your sweet fall feast! (And don’t worry, not EVERYTHING is pumpkin flavored… just most of them.)

Apple Pie

This is the iconic fall dessert. When you think fall, I bet you think falling leaves and apple pie. And there’s a reason it is so iconic: because it is absolutely delectable! When that first bite of pie melts in your mouth, autumn has officially arrived. And whether you like it nice and warm with a bit of ice cream on top or if you like to eat it cold for breakfast, you can not go wrong with good old apple pie.

Pumpkin Pie

This is like the apple pie: recognizably autumnal and tasty as well. I can never decide whether I like pumpkin or apple pie better because they’re both so yummy. But pumpkin pie has that nice smooth cut and a melt-in-your-mouth kind of taste that you just need sometimes on a chilly fall day. Besides, pumpkins are the unofficial fall symbol, right, so you might as well join the masses in enjoying this scrumptious treat.

Pumpkin Bread

Along the same lines as pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread should only be enjoyed during the comforts of fall. There is something so cozy about grabbing a slice of pumpkin bread and a glass of milk while sitting outside in an oversized sweater watching the leaves fall. I’m not entirely sure how many people besides me actually sit and watch leaves fall, but I do know that everyone should be enjoying a slice of pumpkin bread on any given fall day.

Snickerdoodle Cookies

While not technically a “fall” cookie, I like to think the cinnamon allows it to be classified as such. Cinnamon is synonymous with fall, just google apple cider and see what’s resting in the glass. Plus, a warm snickerdoodle cookie (or 10 let’s be honest) hits the spot when you don’t want one of those heavier fall desserts. So go out, grab some friends, make some jokes, and snicker away.

Caramel Apples

These are probably the worst of the best only because the caramel gets stuck all over your face. That does not make it any less delicious. If anything, it allows you to continue eating this dessert all day when you find bits clinging to your chin or the tip of your nose. And, you can even pretend to yourself that you’re being healthy because you know what they say: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

What is more autumnal than pumpkin spice? (Besides apple pie which we already designated as the iconic fall dessert.) Now I realize pumpkin spice is most frequently attributed to a latte, however, I urge you to take your taste buds to a different route. The pumpkin spice cookie is a solid pumpkin spice latte with most likely more calories and more satisfaction. If you’re in the mood for something seasonal but are sick of the same old dessert options (such as the iconic apple pie and delectable pumpkin pie), try a pumpkin spice cookie (or 2, or 3…).

Autumn Spice Cake

This is a cool take on a normal cake because it has a kick to it. As you have probably figured out by the name, the Autumn spice cake is of the seasonal spices you automatically smell when you think of fall. It tastes great and is a change from some of the more classic and tame dessert choices. If you’re feeling adventurous, try out this delightful dish.

Baked Apples

Probably one of the easiest and arguably healthiest options on this list, the baked apple is a definite go-to for me in the fall. It’s so simple to make and tastes amazing. Essentially all you need is an apple corer, an apple, some cinnamon, and brown sugar. Once it comes out of the microwave or oven, that first bite is unlike an apple you’ve tasted before. It’s almost melty and hard at the same time. Plus, when you core it, you can fill the inside with whatever you want, like ice cream.

Apple Crumble/ Apple Crisp

This is another apple dessert for all you apple lovers out there who haven’t tired of them by this point in the article. It almost like a deconstructed apple pie with a twist. You can serve it in scoop form, in pie form, or basically in any form you want. If you’re not a huge fan of the crust part of the apple pie and prefer the filling, this is the dessert for you. Instead of crust, apple crumble uses the apples as the base and is then topped with brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon. To say it’s yummy would be to under-appreciate its significance to my taste buds.

Pumpkin Ice Cream

This is just a bonus item because it’s a classic dessert turned into a seasonal treat. If you go to Boston College, White Mountain Creamery has an AMAZING pumpkin ice cream. It tastes almost like pumpkin pie filling. I could eat it for days, which I would happily do. As New Englanders know, the weather here is always changing. So for a warm autumn day, take a stroll to White Mountain, order a pumpkin ice cream (size of your choice) and you won’t be disappointed.

There are so many things to get excited about during fall, but one of the best is the food. We all have to eat; food is the stuff of life. So, why not enjoy something extra special during a new season, a time for change, and try out one (or all) of these fantastic desserts. Your taste buds will thank you.
