October brings a lot of things to mind. For most, it is Halloween, costumes, and pumpkin-flavored things. For me, it is when the weather goes from that scolding heat to being just the right amount of cool and hot.
I start to notice the arrival of October when stepping outside in the morning no longer feels like entering an oven. The cooler mornings and the less intense afternoons become more and more constant. No longer do I dread going outside.
The change in weather tells me the end of the year is right around the corner. As if Paul Revere were riding around, letting us know that the festive holidays are close. It reminds me of family, sitting together in the warmth of one’s home, enjoying the chatter, the food, and just the overall closeness. It also reminds me of planning one’s goals for the next year and talking about all the things one has accomplished.
Again, I say, October is usually remembered for Halloween, costumes, and pumpkin-flavored things. There is something just as special about the quiet things. It settles in with a calm shift, days turning gentler, the air carrying a softer kind of stillness, and everything around us easing into a slower rhythm. So, to me, October is about letting go and welcoming change.
