I don’t know about you, but each time I open TikTok, I seem to be overwhelmed by a For You Page of the so-called “latest and greatest” trends. From current news, animals and life hacks to food, vlogs and fashion, these 15-second videos influence the masses in ways like never before. Recently, I have witnessed the rising popularity of three particular aesthetics or trends: “That” Girl, “Cool” Girl and the “It” Girl. These concepts of beauty, while being unique in their style, appeal and methods of achievement, target the same audience, subsequently sealing their significance. Let me break down each of these current crazes, hopefully persuading you to take a closer look before you emulate them or even rethink your own style!
“That” Girl
Type this phrase into your TikTok search bar and I guarantee that the results will be a combination of workouts and athletic attire, smoothies and green tea, and all things conveying wellness. “That” girl is a lifestyle. In its simplest form, the concept glamorizes healthy choices and being the greatest version of yourself. The person you see is well-hydrated, rested and relaxed, and adorning her 12-step skincare routine. “That” girl, in all of its glory, should truthfully be who we all aspire to, rather than a glorified aesthetic. If “that” girl is who you hope to be, invest in some colorful workout clothes and update your gym membership!
“Cool” Girl
This trend is the most recent one I’ve observed. Famously identified by TikTok user @madisonvdt, the “cool” girl is a fashion trend, rather than a lifestyle. It’s the classic “model off duty” look with a twist. The “cool” girl maintains her specific style, no matter the event. On September 19, 2021, @madisonvdt first posted a video showing specific attire for the “cool” bride. The “cool” girl is messy, but put together, perfectly constructed, but seamless. If you’re trying to achieve the “cool” girl look, try black and neutrals with pops of color. Maybe invest in some black leather boots, flared jeans, and 70’s inspired sunglasses for looking busy and mysterious during nights out.
The “It” Girl
If this person could be described in one word, it would be “effortless.” Think Serena van der Woodsen and Carrie Bradshaw. In some ways, the “it” girl is less of a style or aesthetic and more of a way of being, like nirvana. Being the “it” girl is a quality you have or the way you carry yourself. You have to be sophisticated, yet flawless to be the “it” girl. If this is the way you hope to be perceived, try combining the lifestyle of “that” girl and the fashion of “cool” girl. The most important thing to remember here is to be yourself! Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but if you’re uniquely you, you will always be the “it” girl of your own world.
Finding yourself in the ever-changing world of fashion fads and social media trends can be a daunting task. These aesthetics are just three in a never-ending cycle. The key takeaway here should be how short-lived any trend can be. Take influence from some or all of them, but never let them dictate your self worth!
