A Diva’s Guide to a Stylish Life

Y’all. It’s time…

Time to up our fashion game. No more basic fits, I say!!! Throw out the 2020 24/7 athleisure wear because it is time to be extra.

Summer break is almost here, and with that, it is the perfect season to learn how to dress. Mama may have taught you how to tie those laces, but Miss K (me) is about to teach you how to put that stuff onnnn.

Firstly, we must answer the question of “why does it matter?” Yes, comfort over style and all that other mumbo jumbo, but let me tell you this. Who is asking you to choose one over the other??? Since when, as a society, did we decide that a separation exists between comfy and chic? Wide-legged pants, hats, and t-shirts are all snug clothing that can serve as the building blocks for a fire fit. Now, without further ado, let’s get into some math.

(Rated 1-5 level of difficulty to style) Baggy Jeans Fitted Jeans
Loose Top 2 3
Fitted Top 1 5
Simplified outfit formula chart

Above is THE stylistic chart in its most basic form that I have created just for you! Here’s the breakdown. Baggy jeans with a baggy top are an easy way to create a nice outfit. It is rated a 2 and not a 1 on the difficulty scale because it can look a bit sloppy depending on how oversized you make each component of the outfit, but trust your instincts. After all, a fashion diva exists in all of us. (Even inside our more fashionably challenged friends). Baggy jeans with a fitted top are an absolute staple and one of my personal favorites to create a “I leave in 5-minutes” kind of day. You could keep it cute and classy or dramatic and daring with fitted tank tops, blouses, and so much more. Next is the fitted jean, loose top combo. Fitted jeans include bell-bottoms, bootcuts, flared, and, of course, skinnies (me and skinny broke up in high school, but you do you, girl!). This outfit can become a little basic if you’re not careful, hence why it is rated a level 3 difficulty. Finally is the fitted top and fitted jean combo. This is a level 5 difficulty because this is where the outfit can get really boring, really fast. The way to go around this leads me to my next point, ACCESSORIES!!!

This ain’t your basic guide to accessories, so stay with me now. To fully step into fashionista territory, one must find their personal accessory, something unique to them that they can contribute to each outfit. For yours truly, that accessory is my hair. If you did not already know, I am in fact a curly gurl and wear my natural crown every which way. Braids, twists, buns, puffs, curls out, trust me when I say that there’s a lot of things I don’t know, but when it comes to hairrrrr I stay in the know!!! Your accessory could be anything from signature razzle-dazzle belts to whimsical makeup moments. By finding and including your personal touch to every outfit, that my friend is how you make fashion your fun.

When it comes to color combos, do not be afraid to mix and match. Let Pinterest be your guide as you discover what colors not only complement each other but also which color you genuinely enjoy wearing. Before you know it, you’ll become a mad scientist, cooking up clothing recipes no one has seen before!

My last piece of advice is this: be strange. I don’t mean make others uncomfortable, but I do mean be okay with having the most extra outfit in the room because if it’s not a wedding, ain’t no such thing as overdressed. Even if you do not have confidence in yourself to wear those gogo boots to class, I have confidence in you and your ability to step into your new era of divahood because the only way to be THAT stylish girl is to wear each outfit with boldness. You are stylish, you are brave, you are HER!
