Winter Beauty: How to Transition from Fall to Winter Looks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

As we transition from fall term into winter term, we can’t forget that our beauty is doing the same thing. The air is getting colder and dryer which means that we need to take extra precautions to keep our skin protected and our hair soft and smooth. Along with that, we are headed into a new season, and with that comes a whole new set of ways to show off our style through our makeup. Below are some ways to stay protected and up-to-date on the latest fashion trends of the season.

1.    Lightweight SPF

A lot of people think that just because it’s winter, you no longer need to use sunscreen; but that’s not actually the case. The sun still shines in the winter, and when it bounces off the snow, it can be much stronger than in the summer. And when it’s cloudy, don’t be fooled; there is a lot more sun coming through them than you think.

What to use: Most foundations have SPFs already in them, but check yours just to be sure. If yours doesn’t, you can find brands like Tarte ($14-36 SPF 30) and SMASHBOX ($25 SPF 15) at Sephora.

2.    Hydrating Conditioner

In the winter your hair can become dry (just like your skin!) Try to swap out your regular conditioner for a deeper conditioning treatment once a week.

What to use: Aussie (3 Minute Miracle Moist $2.97) and Pantene (Pro-V Ultimate 10 BB Crème $5.99) at Target.

3.    Makeup

A big problem during the winter is that you can start to look a little pale from the too many hours of Netflix and chilling and not enough time next to the water. To combat that, start with your base and work from there.

·      Foundation:

Make sure your foundation isn’t too light for your skin. During the summer, you might have used a minimum amount of makeup and let your tan shine, and then for fall, applied a little more as that tan faded. But, now is the time to make sure you’re applying the right amount to give your face color and double check that the foundation you have matches, or is a LITTLE darker than your skin tone, (remember, your skin may be a little more pale than usual. If you have any questions, make sure to ask someone who works at the store you’re buying from.) If you need to, you can add some light bronzer and blush (colors of copper, gold, and dark pink) to give yourself a natural looking glow. Just remember to blend during each step! I am not suggesting an orange face; you just want to add a little extra color.

·      Eyes

Colors that seem to be popular this winter are metallic and silver. Put these colors or a pop of gold on the inner corner creases of your eyes to make whatever color you’re rocking on your outer lids really pop. Other classic colors include gray, blue, plum, and copper.

·      Lips

Super popular this winter is dark lipstick, so opt for a plum or wine colored lip this season. If you feel like you can’t pull off the darker colors, try the classic red lip. If that seems to still be a little too dark, another popular alternative is the glossy lip. Try pairing the gloss with a nude or light pink color. Whatever you decide, don’t leave your lips behind! Giving your lips color (no matter how bold) can make your whole face look complete.

As you can see, it’s not too hard to stay protected and stylish while also staying on a student budget. Nobody said that just because we’re in college it means that we have to be out of the loop when it comes to the latest fashion.
