What’s in a meme? Dancing Winnie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

There’s a disturbance in my feeds of tweets. He lurks in the shadows and strikes when you’re vulnerable. Just bouncin’ and fist pumpin’. Beady eyes and a mischievous smile–a terrifying complexion, but not as terrifying as the bright red top he wears. Once upon a time, he existed in our favorite children’s books and cartoons, replacing our tears with smiles. Now he returns in a poorly 3D animated form. We knew him as Winnie the Pooh, but his new identity is “Dancing Winnie”. The birth of a new meme is here in video format.

The video itself is not quite new. The original was posted back in January of 2015 on YouTube. Basically, it’s an animated Pooh Bear replicating the Gangnam Style dance (only 90s kids will remember). Recently, Dancing Winnie resurfaced on the shores of Twitter with a few new features. Users reupload the video with a new song for Winnie to jam to. For instance, they’ve shown him dancing to Pitbull’s Hotel Room Service (again, only 90s kids will remember) as an out of context reaction

As you can see in the gif above, Pooh passionately waves his imaginary lasso while stomping those stubby feet. His facial expression stays consistent throughout—a tight smile and furrowed brows. The look of pure joy and concentration. In my humble opinion, the moving camera angles really capture the intensity of the scene. The frame slowly shifts down to ground level with Pooh and adds to the playful mood. I guess Christopher Robin just can’t contain him anymore.

It’s time that I present you with some pieces of the Dancing Winnie meme collection. Because you won’t understand what this bear is capable of until you see his work. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
