Top 5 Netflix recommendations for when you really *should* be watching your recorded lectures

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

School can be draining, and online school can be even more so! It’s important to remember during this time to take breaks from school to improve your health and prevent burnouts. One of my personal favorite ways to destress from school is to watch a show on Netflix. Here are some of my favorite tried and true shows that are funny, light-hearted, intense, or all of the above!

Julie and the Phantoms

  • Julie and the Phantoms is a new show on Netflix about a girl who recently lost her mom and her love of singing, and a ghost band that helps her come alive again! This is truly a feel-good show with great songs, lovable characters, and surprising depth. Although there are some cringey moments, I really enjoyed this show and it constantly made me smile. I recommend JATP if you like musical shows and overdramatic characters! Fair warning- prepare for unplanned bingeing and have tissues at the ready for episode eight.

New Girl

  • I can safely say that I have never laughed as much at a show than I have at New Girl! It’s a genuinely funny show, with interesting storylines, and it depicts healthy relationships, both romantic and platonic. If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, New Girl is the show for you! It’s a rare show that has managed to be funny, with a load of heart. The cast members have great chemistry which makes the show that much more enjoyable. The episodes are short, and this show is very easy to binge, so make sure you eventually pay a *little* attention to school!

Criminal Minds

  • Criminal Minds is a 15 season show that is not for the faint of heart. It follows the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit as they analyze “criminal minds” around the country. I recommend this show if you are interested in psychology, don’t scare easily, or a long term show to binge. One of the best things about this show is the relationships between the characters. There aren’t many light-hearted moments in this show, but the few that are included are really moving. If you need a break from your recorded lectures and choose to watch Criminal Minds, be sure you’re in the right headspace for a thriller! There are definitely some intense moments!

Reign

  • Reign is a severely underrated show on Netflix. It’s a period drama that loosely follows the life of Mary Queen of Scots. Produced by CW, Reign is not exactly historically accurate, however, it committed to writing strong female characters. During a time when women had few liberties, Reign is a refreshing view of women that fought for their autonomy, and their goals. If school is especially draining right now, watch Reign and get inspired by women who embraced their power when the whole world didn’t want them to.

The Good Place

  • Life and death? Ethics and morals? A compelling and dynamic cast? The Good Place has it all! On the surface, it’s a comedic show about adjusting to the afterlife, but overall it poses questions concerning what it means to truly be a good person. If you want to watch a show that’s comedic yet makes you think and question ideas you previously held as truths, then this is the show for you. Press pause on those recorded lectures and begin to question everything!
