How Snapchat Can Ruin Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

“It is just a Snapchat.” Flirting, cheating, and jealousy have been focal points of problems within relationships since forever. Snapchat was formed to create bonds with your friends and love interests, no matter where you are in this world. Other social media apps, such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, are more public sharing Apps. Whereas Snapchat creates ways for people to be more discreet, it indirectly causes more weariness within relationships. Snapchat can cause the mind to wonder what your partner is doing and who they are interacting with when you are not around. Uneasiness within relationships comes from still having flirtatious conversations with people while in a committed relationship. This can be quite easy to do on Snapchat since the pictures and videos disappear, and your partner may never know what sneaky picture was sent late at night. The disappearing texts after a certain amount of time and pictures going away in less than ten seconds cause easy and available ways for cheating and flirting to happen within relationships.

Many arguments between relationships can stem from the activity on a person’s Snapchat. Snapchat stops people from engaging in in-person conversations. It can be easy to constantly check Snapchat while having conversations with others. Imagine finally being asked out on a date, and it is going well until you look over and the other person opens up Snapchat as they continue to send and receive pictures. Since Snapchat is easily accessible and thrilling to use in certain aspects, people are avoiding real-life conversations and interactions. The result of lowering the amount of in-person interactions is causing people to feel more lonely and believe that finding a love interest is difficult.
