10 Ways to get Into the Halloween Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

It’s that time of year again. Both the temperature and the leaves are dropping, and the sun is starting to set at 5:00 in the afternoon. Big changes are afoot on Augustana’s campus. Fall has officially arrived! Sometimes, it may be hard to get into the spooky spirit while away at college, and it can be difficult to enjoy certain activities due to lack of transportation. But here are some campus-friendly events that will set the tone for an amazing fall!

1. Go to a campfire.

The nights are getting cold, but cozying up to a campfire and cooking some s’mores will set the tone for a wonderful fall night. Blankets are always a plus here, too!

2. Decorate your dorm room.

Windows are an easy thing to decorate. Stick a few clings on and you’re ready for the season! Decorating dorm doors is an absolute blast as well. Whether you decorate with gel clings or make your own designs, show off what you’ve got!

3. Have a fall photo shoot.

Augustana’s campus is absolutely stunning in the fall and there are plenty of picture-perfect spots to hit. The Slough Path is the most common, but don’t forget about the Founder’s Hall arches or of course, the Viking Plaza!

4. Go thrift shopping for costumes.

College kids are notorious for being on a budget, but we all still like to look cute. Hit the thrift shops with your friends and put together an amazing outfit for a steal of a price.

5. Visit a haunted house.

Haunted houses definitely aren’t for everybody, but they do capture the essence of Halloween. From the dark, winding hallways to the terrifying characters within, this activity will surely put you in a spooky mood.

6. Host a Halloween movie marathon.

From Hocus Pocus to The Conjuring, movies are the perfect way to spend time with friends and indulge in some seasonal spookiness. Popcorn is optional but definitely recommended.

7. Order apple cider from the Brew by the Slough.

Viking Bucks or not, warm apple cider is a fantastic drink for the cold fall days ahead. There’s a special flavor called “The Senior” that adds caramel into the typical cider drink. Don’t forget the cinnamon stick!

8. Paint some pumpkins.

Carving a whole pumpkin can be pretty tricky in a dorm room, so a painting session is a fun alternative! It’s a low-maintenance project that makes no mess!

9. Refresh your look to fit the season.

It’s time to pull the sweaters down from the shelf and rock your finest flannel. Boots are always a necessity and scarves are a classic look. There’s plenty of cozy outfits to combat the cold.

10. Visit OctobHERfest on October 25th!

Augustana’s chapter of Her Campus is hosting a fall celebration starting at 7:00 pm in the lower quad on October 25th! Various booths will be set up such as apple bobbing, pumpkin painting, s’mores, and giveaways. In addition, there will also be a bake sale to raise money for the group! Be sure to check it out and get your fall fix!
