Runway Ready Collegiettes: Workin’ Trends on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

With HC College Fashion Week coming up in Auburn, I have been obsessing over how our models should dress, walk, talk, and even eat. Okay that might be pushing it much, but really, I have been thinking about how modelicous I want our Auburn ladies to look and feel. Sometimes high fashion can be intimidating, and even a bit scary. But collegiettes, I am here to tell you that you can do the catwalk right down the concourse with confidence! For the next three weeks I will be your college modeling advisor, and you will be runway ready just in time for the fashion show at the Hotel at Auburn University.

This week it’s all about the latest trends in fall fashion. The trends of Fall 2013 are all a thing of the past, seriously. This year we are bringing back the nineties, cheetah print, and overalls.  I know it seems kind of weird, but they are all wearable -even on campus!

Trend #1: Leather

Leather is already popping up everywhere. It ranges from full out leather dresses to cutout leather tops, even different colors are cool.

On Campus: wear a comfy t with leather sleeves. Remember, walking around campus no matter what time of the year equals sweat. With lots of leather, walking equals an extra sweaty hot mess, so keep the leather to a minimum for class. Don’t make yourself miserable!

Game Day Leather: Yes, it does exist! I actually own a peplum top that is navy leather on top with a burnt orange flair. Wait until it gets truly chilly in Auburn before attempting this one, and I recommend leather tops with a button up underneath. Because, in reality, I wouldn’t want much leather rubbing against my skin for a whole day; especially not while trying to watch a football game. So no leather pants or skirts, but layered leather tops!

Going Out: Spice it up with leather on bottom. I recommend a leather skirt or pair of pants! Make it casual by adding a graphic tee and cargo boots, or dress it up by adding suede heels and a white lace top.

                Trend #2: Shiny Silver

When I think of metallic silver, I think of gaudy silver prom shoes. But luckily, silver now comes in many forms. It is the perfect piece to turn a drab outfit into totally fab! When wearing silver shoes, keep the rest of the outfit pretty neutral with a small pop of color and let the shoes do the rest of the talking…and walking.  Dress up a simple outfit with heels and dress down a dress with a pair of loafers.

Bonus points for anyone who wears metallic leather pants. If you do it, dress them down–like way down. Keep the rest of the outfit black and white, with a little jewelry.

                Trend #3: Ninety’s Grunge

If you have seen Miley Cyrus in the past few months, or even gotten into the cut-off high-waisted style a little too much (like me), you know grunge is in. Maybe Miley has taken it a little too far for most of us, but it can definitely be chic when done right. Choose anything from overalls to a plaid shirt around the waist, but only one outrageous nineties piece. Accessorize heavily and leave the rest to your “I’m Alanis Morissette” attitude.

On Campus: layer a long sleeved plaid shirt with ripped jeans. It’s a good cool weather transition kind of outfit.

Going Out: Wearing a slightly gaudy, but very chic, floral crop top with straight leg jeans. Bonus to anyone who wears floral jeans and a striped t.

                Trend #4: Socks Rock

Not just socks and flats, but tights and shorts too. Wear simple ankle socks with dressy shoes – to dress it down wear them with high-waisted short shorts, and to warm it up add tights and a sweater.

Game Day: wear tan shoes, white socks, navy tights, and a burnt orange top.

Going Out: wearing heels, slightly scrunched socks, black tights, and a nice top.

She is a senior at Auburn University, majoring in Nutrition & Wellness and minoring in Sustainability. She wrote for Her Campus Auburn for three years before taking on a role as Campus Corespondent. If you ever need her, you can find her in front of a computer, in a garden, or at the gym. Lindy likes to dream big, and right now, that dream consists of owning a garden-bakery while writing agriculture public policy or working for a test kitchen. When she isn't thinking about food, which is apparently rare, she is hiking with her boyfriend and dog, on a feminist rant, or having deep conversations with her best friends Bailey and Melissa.
