On The Hunt: Post-Grad Job Search

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

As seniors, we’ve been hearing how poor the job market is since before we even entered college. Now that graduation is fast approaching, it’s time to focus on breaking into the ‘real’ world. It may seem early to be thinking about career choices and applications but now is the time to get ahead of the game!

Be Open

If you’re anything like me, you’ve had your desired location in the back of your mind for ages. But you can’t always get what you want, and you have to be aware of that when looking for jobs. If you’ve had your heart set on California but the only jobs come without benefits or it has a description you hate, it may not be the best choice to make. Go where you’ll be secure and happy in your career.

Sometimes Internships Trump Jobs

With a job market like todays the internship route is sometimes the way to go. The great thing about internships is that you get to the test the waters of different careers before you make a move. You can pick any location, position, and length available without being locked in to a contract. Think New York City is for you? Try a paid internship and see if you can handle the fast-paced life or find out if the sweet and slow South is where you truly belong.

Be Realistic About Your Options

Just because you received an Engineering degree from our wonderful school doesn’t mean you’ll be making 100k off the bat. You have to be realistic about your offers and choices when it comes to your career. Don’t expect things you haven’t earned, and don’t be afraid to start small.  When it comes to your post-grad career, do something you really love even if it’s not for the amount of money you envisioned.
